Hi Everyone! This is Buddha and he is only a year old as of this past November. He is a lab mix that is in serious condition at the moment at Univeristy of Guelph. The other night he was showing signs of trouble breathing and was struggling to stand, eat, walk, and even go outside. I was worried, so I took him to emergency vet near my college in London, Ontario. They took him right in and started to asset him, noticed his heart rate was very high and was experiencing adominal discomfort. They took blood, did a ECG, ultrasound and noticed fluid in his lungs, they asked that we remove it right away. He had a insane amount of fluid and were seriously worried for his his heart rate, it was late into the night, I was stressing and they suggested I try to take him to my regular vet to do more testing which opened at 8 am. So buddha and I got in the car, no sleep, and headed for Brantford where I went to West Brant Animal Hospital and then they did another ECG and said that his heart rate is way too high and if he doesn't go to Guelph he isn't going to make it. We got the referral to go to Guelph and they took Buddha right in and gave him medication to lower his heart rate, he as been in
Guelph since yesterday morning and they are giving me updates. Buddha has a enlarged heart because he has an arrythmia and a very fast heart rate; with the help of the medication it has currently gone down into the 80s and was in the high 300s, they are now trying to ween him onto an oral treatment so he can come home. If buddha makes it through the oral treatments he is going to need constant care for the rest of his life, he has a bad heart and will need medications and vet visits for a long to come or forever. He could possibly need surgery, it's all very hard to comprehend and accept.
Buddha has only been in my life for a year now but he is everything to me, my best friend, my son, my baby, my heart and soul go into this dog, he has been there when I'm sad, when I'm angry, when I'm happy, he is always there. And now I need to be strong and be there for my Buddha, the best I can do for him. I look into his eyes and see his future with me still. Please help Buddha live the life he deserves, it's not his time to say goodbye to me, the world, or to anyone.
I have my family support behind me, as well as
my parents who are animal rescuers who have payed many vet bills already, we will do anything for our

Monday May 5 Buddha has to visit his local Vet, for some pre-operative test, including several blood tests and an ECG- The results will be e-mailed to Ohio. Buddha will begin his adventure for his Cardiac Surgery in Ohio, by leaving home very early Thursday May 8. He needs to be at the Vet Clinic at noon and it is a 7 hour drive. Once he arrives in Ohio, he will be meet by the Cardiac Surgeon and his team . At this time we must leave him in their hands as they need to run many more tests, and start to wean him off his anti-arrhythmic drugs. ( the purpose of taking him off his anti-arrhythmic drugs is so that.....during the surgery he will experience the abnormal heartbeats ) He will have an ECG monitor applied for constant monitoring and will be placed in the ICU, so that he can be watched closely. ( we are hoping that they might allow a visit in the evening- we will just have to wait and see) May 9 in the morning will be his Cardiac ablation surgery. (We will be sitting in the waiting room biting our nails ) Cardiac ablation is a procedure-surgery that is used to treat abnormal heart rhythms ( arrhythmias) A special catheter will be introduced via a large vein/artery and fed into his body until it reaches the heart. Buddha's arrhythmia is located in his left ventricle, (lower left chamber of heart). This catheter will deliver "radio-frequency " energy that will create controlled lesions at his 2nd abnormal conduction pathway site, (He should only have1 conduction pathway site) These lesions on his heart will become scar tissue. The scar tissue blocks the abnormal electrical impulses from being conducted, promoting a normal heartbeat through the proper pathway. Once the surgery is completed, Buddha is monitored very closely to ensure that the procedure was successful and no arrhythmia occurs. Also he will never need the very expensive anti-arrhythmias, and never have to experience the harsh side effects of long-term use of these drugs. He will need to remain on the other drugs for a few months, than they will be weaned off. May 10, if all goes well Buddha will begin his journey back home (another 7 hour drive ) as a HEALTHY dog. Buddha will have to have several tests following this surgery at timed intervals ie. 1 month, 3 mths, 6mths and again at 1year. These tests will include ECG's and a variety of blood tests just to make certain that all is well.
