Help Bring Gabe Home

Donation protected
Friends, in 2010, Gabriel Akok went back to the Sudan in hopes of supporting his country become independent. Since returning to his birth country, Gabe started his family by getting married and having a baby boy, named Akok. Unfortunately, in the summer of 2013, violence broke out yet again in Sudan, leaving Gabe and his family right in the middle of a civil war:again. For the past 5 months, we have had little to no contact with him; a phone call here, a short email there, letting us knows he was safe for the time being, hiding amongst the bush with his family. It wasn't until the end of February, that I received an email from him explaining that he had made it safely to Uganda, hoping to apply for a new passport, that had been lost during his escape from Sudan. His wife and child have made it safely to Kenya, but have not been able to reunite with Gabe yet. His intent is to make it back the United States (since he still has his citizenship) to start a new job and apply for visas for his family, so that he can be reunited with his family and they can settle down in their new home.

OUR GOAL: Gabe should have his passport within the next two weeks, meaning he could potentially be ready to get on a plane by the end of March. We are hoping to raise enough funds to get Gabe here with enough money to stay on his feet for a few months until he's able to find a job.

We are asking you to think back to those times at Arcadia when Gabe told us the most amazing stories, making our world a little bit bigger every time he opened up to us to share his life stories, whether horrific, beautiful or downright funny:sometimes, they were (somehow) all three. Remember his soft voice, bright smile and incomparable generosity and ask yourself how you can help our deserving friend come back home. Passing on Starbucks for a month is a part of his flight home, skipping that Wawa hoagie is a new tie for a job interview, eating leftovers for lunch once a week is the application fee for his family's visas.

A small change in our lives will make a huge difference in the life of a man that has been through enough already.
