Malya Yuturringu: Be a Star Film Festival will bring Hollywood to over 300 Martu youth in the Western Desert this October!
It is the dream of two young people, Curtis Taylor (Martu Filmmaker, 25) and Iolanthe Fitzgerald (23), to bring six Western Desert communities together to acknowledge the talents of 300+ Martu youth residing in the communities.
The event is a three-day camping and film festival held at Karlamilyi National Park and will showcase a variety of short-films across genres such as drama, comedy and documentary, which the Martu youth directed and produced while attending the Martu School Holiday Program. It offers Martu youth the opportunity to come together, share experiences and showcase their filmmaking abilities. In addition, youth will be provided with a variety of workshops such as film, music, cooking and art.
The aim of the project is to foster self-esteem and confidence in the youth, and alleviate boredom often leading to volatile substance abuse and petty crime. This is an important project for the Martu Community as it works to alleviate substance use, such as petrol sniffing, and petty crime that the youth often partake in as a direct result of boredom. One of the groups from Jigalong has even made a film on petrol sniffing and how it affects your life and the lives of those around you!
This is a unique experience for the youth and provides an opportunity for the kids to express their dreams creatively, whilst demonstrating their talents at the same time.
For the festival to go ahead Malya Yuturringu requires substantial funding for logistics, equipment and camp setup. Please donate now and help us to bring this exciting event to the Western Desert!
