Cancer Medical Tests

My brother Alex has been battling cancer for 4 years now. His cancer began in the mediastinum, which is the cavity that holds the heart. The tumor is inoperable because it is in such a high risk region. The cancer quickly spread to his pancreas, which was operated on and eradicated from the pancreas. He went through many chemotherapy and radiation treatments. Many months later he began to get strong again and was even able to travel to visit us (he lives in Puerto Rico and I live in Chicago) soon after his nephew, my 4 year old son, was diagnosed with leukemia. We had a wonderful visit. He went back home to Puerto Rico to soon learn that the cancer had spread to a lung and esophagus. He kept fighting through. Later tests showed the tumors were stagnant so he began oral chemo treatments. 
The past few months have been unbearable for him, he has such horrific pain that no medicine or drug is able to help him. In a recent CT Scan, the results show that the tumors, specifically the mediastinum tumor is showing signs of growth. His oncolgist  has been asking his health insurance to approve a new PET Scan and they have denied it over and over again for the past 2 months. Alex is getting worse, he is not able to function and doctors fear that the cancer has spread to his bones, there is no other explanation for the excrutiating pain. But he still will not be approved for the PET Scan. His oncologist needs the PET scan results to determine the correct course of new treatment. Without it the oncologist will risk having to start treatment blindly and perhaps inacurately. That is why I have created this fundrasing page. The PET Scan costs $4,000 in Puerto Rico. Alex has no idea that I have created this fundrasing page, he would be so angry!! He is very private and does not want to worry friends and family. Despite his likely disapproval, I care that he gets this test so his doctors can treat him properly. I am begging our friends and family to help him get funding for this critical test.
