COVER (Community Outreach for Vietnam Era Returnee's) is a local 501c-3 based in Charlottesville VA. The organization, which is run by Mary James, offers emotional support and counseling to veterans and families suffering from PTSD (Post Traumatic Stress Disorder) and TBI (Traumatic Brain Injury). Mary has been working with veterans for over 25 years and currently carries a caseload of nearly 50 veterans and families in the Central Virginia area.
While the name suggests only Vietnam veterans, Mary sees veterans from Vietnam all wars including Operation Enduring Freedom/Operation Iraqi Freedom. COVER's work is essential to the well-being and safety of some of the nation's greatest heroes.
Over the past two years, COVER has lost both state and federal funding, setting a course for serious financial difficulties and the possibility of COVER closing its doors. We are looking to raise $6,000 to pay the rent for 1 year but hope to get even more to increase support to veterans and families in need.
