Hello friends!
Our beloved nanny, Lida, has had a tough break here in Baku. Very recently and suddenly, she has become seriously ill with renal failure, probably associated with Type 2 diabetes. She was in a state-run hospital for a week; she has gone home but is unable to continue work. She will need dialysis 3 times a week until her kidney function improves, and possibly for the rest of her life.
For any of our friends and family who have visited us in Azerbaijan, it will come as no surprise that health insurance is non-existent and that the medical system here is either shoddy, dangerous, or very expensive. The socialized hospital where she was admitted was filthy and inadequate. Thankfully her sister was able to get her out and get her to a private clinic, where she can get her treatment from a competent, reliable doctor. However, without insurance, she has to pay her costs for dialysis out-of-pocket. This will run her at least $350 a week.
Lida has been a part of our life here since Day 1 and we consider her to be like family. She had been taking care of Felicity and Sebastian and has been simply wonderful with them - both children adore her. She has fallen on some rough times - not only does she have her own illness to deal with, but she cares for her 86-year-old mother. She doesn't have a husband or children (the traditional means of support here), so it falls on her sister to provide for all of her expenses. The average salary here is $400 a month so you can imagine what a strain Lida and her family are under right now. We want to help her until she can get back on her feet a bit.
We don't usually ask for money for causes, and we recognize that Lida's situation is not unique (not even in the U.S., sadly!) and not as serious as elsewhere in the world. However, this is a opportunity to make a concrete difference in a specific person's life in a pretty poor country. Philip and I can and will help her as much as possible, but we hope that the combined power of our wonderful friends and family will multiply our efforts.
