Empowering Costa Rican Farmers

We are a team of eight Vancouver Island University students embarking on an internship-exchange program to the Los Santos region of Costa Rica for the Heart of Gold Project. The Heart of Gold project offers life-changing experiences for us and the families we are visiting through hands-on involvement in community empowerment and development for small scale farmers living in poverty.
Currently, the focus of the project is on building the Los Santos Eco-Trail. The project helps to stabilize fragile farm economies, support social equity, and provide educational resources for the communities. The student internship placements are essential to the Heart of Gold Project. The overall goal for the project is to aide in the development of sustainable tourism initiatives through community empowerment with Costa Rican farming families. Our goals as students is to practice and apply what we have learned from the Tourism Management program at VIU to the real world.
Funding for the project will be utilized among the students for travel expenses, supplies & materials along with additional project costs. The money raised here will have a direct impact on the development of the Los Santos Eco-Trail and the families involved. With your support this bright and wonderful group of Vancouver Island University students will be able to help those who need it most.
