Most of you may know Leslie suffered a massive heart attack on February 11, 2014 that almost took her life but most of you may not know what has led up to that.
for those of you that know leslie or have ever met her, you know that she is typically always smiling and cracking jokes and never fails to keep you laughing. what many don't know is that behind her quick witted humor over the last six years she has endured more pain and suffering than most of us will ever experience in our life time. despite all that leslie has endured she has tried to remain strong and put on a brave face for her two boys, who are the loves of her life and who love their momma dearly. leslie's journey began back in 2008 when her youngest son was only 4 months old and she was told that she needed to have her gallbladder removed. many people have their gallbladder removed each year without any complications following the procedure, but in july of the same year, leslie became very ill and after being hospitalized was told that she was suffering from a condition called chronic pancreatitis. pancreatitis, for those of you who don't know, is inflammation of the pancreas which occurs when digestive enzymes produced in your pancreas become activated while inside the pancreas, causing damage to the organ, in her case everything was backing up into her liver and then her blood stream causing sepsis. chronic pancreatitis can cause: bacterial infections which can damage healthy tissue requiring intensive treatment which often includes surgical removal of damaged tissue, internal bleeding, respiratory distress, kidney failure, diabetes, malnutrition & pancreatic cancer. during leslie's first hospitalization her physician felt like her pancreatitis could be treated with a stent, but when then stent would not stay in place she was referred to one of the top pancreatic surgeons in the country for full pancreas removal called a whipple procedure. which is a very extensive surgery with not the best mortality rate. luckily once they open her up the decided to leave some pancreas which unfortunately still causes her to have pancreatitis episodes which are extremely painful and also leaving her a diabetic. due to complications from her surgery leslie spent most her time from september through november in the hospital, only to return again again days later finally being discharged on christmas eve so that she could be spend the day with her family and be with her youngest son for his first christmas. much to she and her family's dismay she had to be readmitted to the hospital on christmas day, a christmas she would never forget, but not for the reasons she had so hoped for. this christmas she had to have emergency surgery to have her appendix removed and due to other unforeseen complications she was not able to have less invasive laparoscopic surgery & had to remain in the hospital for another 2 1/2 weeks. over the last six years leslie has endured immeasurable pain and countless complications from her pancreatitis; a few which have included: pulmonary embolisms (blood clots in the lungs, that can become fatal if not treated promptly), multiple syncope episodes which have caused her to lose her balance & fall many times leaving her with various contusions & black eyes. leslie's quality of life has slowly and progressively diminished over the last six years & on february 11, 2014 she sustained a massive heart attack, known as the widow maker. the type of heart attack she sustained is known as a widow maker, because in many cases it results in sudden death. leslie's heart attack revealed 100% blockage in the left side of her heart from blood clots which lead to emergency surgery where an angioplasty was performed to remove the blockage and a stint was placed in the heart. leslie spent five days in icu & was monitored closely to ensure her oxygen levels did not drop to a dangerously low level. leslie was able to go home on february 19, but because of the damage caused to the left side of her heart she had to be sent home with a "life vest defibrillator,"which will shock her heart automatically when necessary & after 3 months if her heart is healthy she will be able to take it off. the hope and prayer is that the left side of leslie's heart will begin to function properly, but if it does not a pacemaker will be necessary. after reading leslie's story we would ask that you prayerfully consider making a financial gift to help provide for her family.
