The Quick family needs our help!

Jeremy and Eleanor Quick's five year old daughter was diagnosed with a cancerous kidney tumor in mid August of 2018. She has already had surgery in Denver to have the tumor and kidney removed and is now facing radiation and chemotherapy in the coming weeks. The Quick family needs our help!

On August 11, 2018, Jeremy and Eleanor Quick took their five year old daughter to the emergency room early in the morning. She had been experiencing stomach pain for a few days and had not been eating or drinking enough, and it seemed like maybe she was dealing with something like appendicitis.

The doctors ran some tests and scans and came back with the news: it seemed like the Quicks’ little girl had a tumor on her kidney, and that something had ruptured and been bleeding. They kept her stable until they could get her on a medical flight to Denver at around 2:30 in the afternoon. Jeremy rode along on the flight, and Eleanor packed up and began the drive to Denver a few hours later with their little boy.

Once they were settled in at Children’s Hospital of Colorado in the Cancer ICU wing, more tests were run and a surgery date was set for Monday the 13th. The surgical team and specialists were optimistic that they would be able to remove the tumor, but they also were expecting to remove either all or part of the kidney and maybe the appendix as well.

Surgery began Monday morning. It was an anxious time for Jeremy and Eleanor. They knew that the surgical team felt confident and that the surgeon was one of the best kidney tumor specialists in the country, but they also knew that the surgery would reveal whether their daughter would need radiation and chemotherapy or not.

Once the surgeon had completed the removal of the tumor and the kidney, he shared with them the news that the appendix appeared to be in good enough shape to leave alone, but that their daughter would need radiation in Denver and then a round of chemo back in Kalispell. The team was going to install a medi-port in her chest in preparation for the chemotherapy treatments, and then she would be back to the room soon after.

The doctors explained that the tumor was known as a Wilms tumor, and that most Wilms tumors are highly responsive to treatment.

The next couple of days were a whirlwind for the Quick family. Eleanor’s brother was with them from Saturday until Tuesday morning, and Jeremy’s parents and sister were able to be there for a few days after the surgery. Jeremy and Eleanor are dealing with a lot of emotions and grief as they come to grips with their new reality and with being uprooted so suddenly from their everyday way of life. The next few weeks will likely be spent in Denver for outpatient radiation treatment once the hospital stay is over.

The Quick family has a long, tough road ahead of them. Caring for a daughter with a cancer diagnosis means lots of time in isolation from germs and viruses, and lots of doctor and hospital appointments. The treatments and recovery come with a lot of uncertainty, stress, and fear.
