The Gift of life

Donation protected
After a year of waiting for a good match, Mo has found a donor. The best match turned out to be his roommate from freshman year. They soon became best friends, and now Julian is giving Mo the gift of life.

It has been a tough year for Mo doing dialysis every day, not being able to attend school, all while waiting for the right match. At many points he felt as though he would never get off the machine or find a match. Thankfully, his friend decided to step forward and get tested. Julian is 21 years old, from Illinois, attending UC, and studying in the same program as Mo.

Julian has been supporting Mo since the initial diagnosis last December and then he and his parents decided to get tested and help Mo get back to his life. Among a list of 10 people who were potential donors, Julian was the best match.  Julian decided to go for it and give the gift of life to his friend.

Julian’s generosity and gracious soul proves that there are great people in this world who believe in making a difference. There are many ways to follow Julian’s lead and make this world a better place. Kidney and liver transplant centers are always in need of more people, giving blood to local health centers, getting tested for bone marrow donations, and more are all ways to make a difference. There is a common misconception that these donations are putting your own life at risk, but that is simply not the case; these doctors and health professionals will not allow for even a fraction of risk to the donor.

Because of selfless people like Julian, during the past five years, more than 5,500 transplants were made possible by living donors. It is not an easy decision to decide to donate a part of your body to help somebody else. Yet, it is a choice that will give someone the gift of life.

Julian and Mo are planning to live together for the next school year to look after each other and maintain a healthy life style. Help us give Julian and Mo one less thing to worry about, by helping us raise money to pay for their first year of rent.
