This June, Chicago will celebrate its 17th annual World Refugee Day – but we need your support to bring this event to life for our refugee community! Your donation will fund the key activities needed to hold our annual commemoration of World Refugee Day at Pottawottomie Park in Rogers Park, one of the city's most diverse neighborhoods.
Since 2002, Chicago has recognized World Refugee Day with events that honor the lives of refugees, provide a platform for their voices, and raise awareness for the millions of refugees in the world who have been forced to flee their homes. With the recent increase in hateful rhetoric and xenophobia, it has never been more important to continue community-focused traditions like this one.
And we can’t do it without you. Our organizers volunteer their time to put on this event in addition to committing their careers to organizations that welcome and serve refugees on a daily basis. Stakeholder agencies give what they can, but face increasing pressure to provide as much as possible with as little as possible, especially after repeated cuts to federal refugee admissions. Because of this, unfortunately, we are not yet able to meet the costs to cover the event this year.
The community picnic, cultural performances, and soccer tournament for World Refugee Day are highly anticipated by hundreds of Chicagoland refugees year after year.
Help us raise $1,500 to keep this tradition alive and continue supporting the local refugee community. No amount is too small, and every amount goes to welcoming the families and individuals who have traveled for miles and years to start a new life in our city.
