WATER: A basic necessity that every human being deserves.
Unfortunately, millions of people around the world lack access to clean water. You can help change that. The Waterbuck Project brings running water to a rural village in South Africa. It is changing lives.

Founded by a single man with a heart like no other, The WaterBuck Project brings running water to a rural village in South Africa.  Although they live down the road from posh safari resorts, almost none of the residents of Welverdiend Village had ready access to a basic necessity:  water...until Mr. Jim Buck took it upon himself to solve their problem....

Welcome to The WaterBuck Project

A warm welcome to everyone who wants a chance to make a difference!! This unique project is revolutionary in its simplicity and effectiveness. It is a true story of one man who cares "“ and now needs your help to make an even bigger impact. This project presents an extraordinary opportunity to help change the world:one person and one village at a time.

In the summer of 2002, 61-year-old Jim Buck went to Africa with a study abroad group from Texas A&M University. While there, he was moved by the challenges facing the 10,000 residents of Welverdiend Village. The villagers "“ subsistence farmers "“ shared a mere two taps from two wells, and one of those wells was failing. A very dry disaster awaited the area.

Water scarcity continues to be one of the main threats to life and health in many parts of the world, especially sub-Saharan Africa, causing malnutrition and disease. In Welverdiend, the two taps that existed provided a small amount of desperately needed water "“ but not nearly enough. Village women had to spend hours of their day walking to far away wells to collect water in jugs.

Jim Buck was convinced that he could help. He returned to Welverdiend, contacted local drillers, bought equipment, and began drilling wells "“ all with money he spent from his own pocket. He trained local villagers, and together they began installing taps in the front yards of village homes.

Building on this success, Buck has repeated it, drilling seven more wells, installing 700 water taps, and empowering the people of the village.

Upon learning about Jim Buck and his miraculous water project, two tourists from Santa Barbara, CA pledged matching support to others who would step forward and make a difference by bringing water to the front yards of villagers. The WaterBuck Project was born.

The Project's goal is to help Jim Buck drill additional wells "“ bringing water taps to all the homes in Welverdiend (another 800 homes), and increasing the water available to each household. With enough wells, taps in the front yards of each home will additionally allow for small, drip-watered home gardens as well as sanitation. This will provide for much needed vegetables in otherwise low nutrition diets, and much needed sanitation. The project's goal is to improve nutrition, sanitation, and the quality of life for the people of Welverdiend village.

Here is an approximate break down of costs and people served:

Average Cost of Drilling/Equipping Each Well: $5,000**

People Served Per Day, Per Well: 1,000

Average well lifespan: 5 years

Cost to provide water to each person, per year $1.00

**Note: These are averages based on other wells drilled in the village, as each well is different.

Based on an approximate well life of 5 years, each villager can have access to clean water for about 1/3 of a cent a day. So as you can see, even a small contribution can make a tremendous difference in someone's life.

The project has no overhead costs. All money received from GoFundMe goes directly to pay for drilling and equipping the wells.

Your generous gift now will also be part of a dollar-for-dollar match on the first $20,000 raised. You can make a one-time donation, or donate every month to bring a new life to deserving people!

Water is necessary for survival. Think of how you would live your life without it, or how your life would be impacted in you had to spend most of your day finding it. Imagine the human potential that will be unlocked in a world where all children have access to clean water and fresh vegetables; where precious hours once used to walk miles to collect a basic necessity, can now be used to raise a garden, or get an education. Imagine if everyone had equal access to resources that should belong to all of us.

This is how we change the world. One person, one village at a time. Jim Buck is leading the way.
