Sending Shoes to Slobodskoy

My name is Madeline Smith and I am a senior at Carrboro High School and I am asking for a few minutes of your time to help me with my vision. I have played on the field hockey team, swim team, and lacrosse team for four years. Each year I find myself buying new cleats, swim suits, or a new pair of shinguards. I am very privileged to have the ability to buy new equipment annually so that I can keep my body healthy and safe while playing the sports I love. My passions don't just include playing spots I also have been part of Mission 1:27 since I was in 8th grade. Each spring break a group of teenagers and their parents travel to Slobodskoy, Russia. We spend five days in an orphanage that Christ United Methodist Church sponsors through individual families. During my first trip I was completely taken back by the gratitude and love that I felt from the children at the orphanage and their caretakers. I asked myself what these children were missing? I thought back to the first trip. I remember playing soccer with a group of boys outside in the snow. Before we went outside I had to put my parka on and hiking boots because the ground was covered in ice and the snow went up to my waist. While the boys wore slippers or sandals with just socks to protect their feet from the harsh winter. However, even with all of my clothing and shoes protecting me I soon learned that I was an amateur playing with very experienced boys. After my third trip to Russia I decided that if playing sports is away to escape the harsh reality that these children have grown up in and have to eventually live alone that the least I can do is find a way to provide each child with a pair of sneakers. I have gone through plenty of shoes each year and throughout my lifetime and I want to allow each child in the orphanage to be able to have something that is theirs. My goal is to raise $6,000 in order to purchase proper athletic shoes from a sporting goods store in Russia. Each child will have his or her own pair of shoes that will fit properly. I am asking you to join me in my vision of helping show these children that someone cares and that are worth it. Thank you for taking the time out of your busy day to read this heartfelt note and considering helping me in my mission.
