We are in Ontario, Canada
My name is Brigitte Giunta and my husband Paul was diagnosed with Polycystic Kidney Disease May 2012. I am his full time caregiver. His twin brother Peter was diagnosed 2 months earlier, both of them at end stage and are now on dialysis. The doctors asked for the family to all be tested in case some of them may have the same disease because it is genetic. Paul being Peter's identical twin meant Paul could give Peter one of his kidneys and it would be a perfect match. Unfortunately Paul having the disease meant no family transplant for Peter. Paul and Peter are no longer on the list. They got kidney transplants. Peter got his April 5th 2017. It took 3 hours of surgery and it went well. Peter is now home. Paul got his April 8th 2017. It took 3 and half hours and it went well also. He was in the hospital till April 14th. Now we wait for their full recovery.

Peter's kidney is working really well at almost 100% already. Paul's kidney is still not fully active. He was on a strict diet of no meat, low potassium, low phosphorous and low sodium for 2 weeks. He is now on a regular diet according to the Canada Food Guide. . They are both were on 30 pills a day and now on a 13 pills daily regiment. They have to go back to the hospital once a month for tests and Clinic to review their meds till further notice. They also do blood work locally once a week.

UPDATE: Paul has been ill the last 4 weeks. They changed his medication schedule to see if it helps and put him on Imodium. It is helping a little but still have issues. He will be seeing his doctors at the hospital on August 28th and hopefully he will be doing better by then. He is doing better and his now on a low dose of the medication that was making him ill. He is also on medication for the gout for both his feet.

Paul was also diagnosed with an aneurysm to the back right of his brain. He had an MRI December 2014. He had a consult with a Neurosurgeon on July 10th 2015 and was told that his aneurysm is 2 mms. He had an MRI August 25, 2016 and his brain aneurysm grew another 1/4 making 2.5 mms. He had another MRI April 6th 2017 to see if it is still growing. Paul was also diagnosed since his illness with clinical depression which causes insomnia and many other issues including being suicidal. He is on anti-depressants and is in counselling.

Our picture shows Paul waiting at the renal transplant office  waiting to do his blood work and clinic at St Michael's Hospital.
