Take kaelin to Uganda

Ubuntu, a word I now live by every day, but had no idea how much it actually meant until I experienced it firsthand. As a lady sat next to me in the slums of Uganda, I remember sitting in the City Year office (the non- profit I joined right after high school) in a training about different values. One of the values that stood out most to me was Ubuntu. They continued to go over the word and its meaning several times, but I thought it just meant something completely different. As I sit with this lady reading an atlas to a few kids, she kept saying "you are meant to be here, you are meant to teach these kids, and it wasn't until then that I realized what the word Ubuntu was all about. Ubuntu means I am because we are." or "my humanity is tied to yours." an hour in the slums made me realize that what I do back home can effect and help people and things around the world.  I graduated from Montbello High School in 2012. My senior year I was in a class called Intro to Urban Education. In this class I learned about urban youth, and different ways to teach kids in urban areas, and to understand how they learn. Through this class, I was able to apply for a scholarship that would send me to Uganda and Rwanda for three weeks to listen. Think. Act. This is Global Livingston institutes mission. We went to just experience, to indulge ourselves in another culture and listen, and then we were challenged to come home and process, and see what things we could do back home that might one day impact Uganda. The year after high school, I joined a non-profit called City Year, I graduated from City Year in 2013. A year later a fellow City Year corps member posted about a trip to Uganda that Alumni of City Year could apply to, I applied in hopes of getting a yes, and that’s why your all reading this long description! I have one BIG goal! The trip to Uganda and Rwanda is from June 10th-June 27th 2015. I will be going along side as a mentor to students who have not yet been on the trip! I am so excited that my leadership has grown enough for me to enjoy something as amazing as Uganda alongside students who are doing amazing things in their communities. So of course with any trip comes lots of ticket purchasing, and lots of other things to pay for, so I am reaching out to people I know, and anyone in communities around me and asking for help. The total price of my trip is $4500 dollars, but I have until March 30th to get $2000 dollars turned in so I can buy the plane ticket. I am asking for anyone if possible to make any donation of any kind, also to share my page! $3 dollars helps, .50 cents helps, pressing the share button helps. I can't wait to share this experience, but I can't do it alone!
