Ten years ago, my brother, Scott and his wife, Christina were blessed with their baby girl, Raqual. In these ten years, she has taught everyone about love and tenderness; both something the world needs more of today. This remarkable girl loves reading, her brother, school, riding her bike, the monkey bars, snowmen, crafts, Lake Superior and rocks.....lots of rocks. All very typical until you dig a little deeper.
A few years ago, Scott and Christina held a garage sale and gave Raqaul and her brother, Wyatt, 3 choices for any money they profited. The kids could split the money evenly, buy school supplies, or use the money to purchase food for their home town, Three Lakes, food pantry. Without hesitation, they both said "Food Pantry." They did just that. Upon delivering the food, Scott and Christina witnessed how happy the kids were helping others.
Raqual hugs those that are hurting, friends those needing a buddy and cares more for others than herself. She finds hearts everywhere (in Cherrios, clouds, obscure pictures and even potato chips). When most of us don't notice these little special things, she does.
Last year for Christmas, Raqual asked Santa if she could make her Uncle Tony unparalyzed from his stroke. She asked for nothing else.
At the end of the school year, Christina discovered little notes in the kid's lunch boxes. They had been writing notes to each other. It is touching to see how much they care about each other.
August 17, 2018, their world changed when Raqual was diagnosed with T-Cell Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia (cancer). In three weeks, she has already had many needle pokes, a PICC line inserted into the superior vena cava of her heart, blood transfusions, platelet transfusions, spinal taps, bone aspiration and lots and lots of chemotherapy (which, in short, is a mix of steroids and toxic drugs).
While in the hospital, her mom slept on a little bench in the room not wanting to leave her side. On one of the evenings, Raqual offered her mom one of her blankets; she must have looked cold. Here she was so very, very sick and feeling awful, yet thinking about others. Her tender heart always causes her family to pause and now with more appreciation than they've ever given before.
Wyatt cried to his mom that he wished he was sick so his sister didn't have to feel this pain. Their love for each other is unwavering and the depths amaze all.
Raqual's treatment will take three to five years of chemotherapy, radiation and what else, they don't know at this point. After treatment, her life will be filled with lots of monitoring and follow up appointments to ensure the cancer has not come back. The very thing that is used to kill the cancer and save her life has many side effects. The family lives in the today, looking forward to each tomorrow.
Yesterday, they were a regular family. They were working hard, raising their children to be good people, helping family, friends and neighbors and just living the best that they knew. Today, they are in for the fight of their lives and loving every moment they are given with their children.
