KARMA’S COMEBACK!

This GoFundMe is for someone truly special - our dear friend, Karma. She is a beloved member of a small, Kootenay mountain town in BC, Canada. A mother and a grandmother, who brings joy and inspiration to those around her through her love of family, friends, community and the outdoors. Her most favourite outdoor activities include forest bathing, gardening and kayaking. She is certified as a Forest Therapy Guide and a practicing Yoga Teacher. Karma is the kind of person who lifts others up — and now it is our turn to lift her up.

In 2016, Karma’s life was forever changed by a devastating event. While travelling on a boat to see friends in Mexico, something very unexpected happened. She vividly recalls and describes that moment as: “A tall purple wave of ocean rose up suddenly. Staring at it, I held on to the side of the boat as it sped rapidly toward the tower of water. The boat went up the huge swell to the top where it was momentarily suspended - and my world was changed in an instant.”

The boat crashed back down with such force that it shattered Karma’s spine, leaving her paralyzed. But in true, Karma spirit - she faced the unimaginable with resilience, courage, and grace. Through months of hospital care and rehabilitation she fought to regain independence, relying on specialized equipment to maintain her hard-won freedom. Now, Karma urgently needs our help. The equipment she depends on: a power wheelchair with adaptations, an articulated bed with specialized mattress, plus a portable shower chair, and some ramps (to navigate stairs at entryways) is now non-functioning and irreparable.

Karma’s doctor, a medical specialist and a complex seating specialist have prescribed updated equipment to meet her changing needs. Unfortunately, her medical insurance will not cover the full cost of these vital items, which are required immediately to restore her quality of life. The total cost of the new equipment, including shipping is beyond Karma’s ability to cover alone, so we have a goal of $38,000. to cover the difference. Without these important supports, Karma is losing her ability to move freely, to tend to the tasks of daily living and to participate in the community she loves. She has been confined to long and painful hours in bed, unable to do the things which are necessary and also those which bring joy.

Karma has always been there for us by spreading lots of love, laughter and light. We now have the opportunity to reciprocate and contribute to the care of a valued community member. Every donation, no matter what the size, will help provide the essential equipment Karma needs to lessen her daily physical pain, increase her quality of life, reclaim her independence, and to continue being the vibrant person she is for her and for the community.
