Meet Kelly!

Kelly is a very special, brave and courageous, 51-year-old cancer fighter. Less than 6 months ago cancer would not have been in her description at all but fighter certainly would have been. Since she was a little girl Kelly has had to be a fighter. When she was only 10 years old she lost her father. Following that tragic event her mother struggled and eventually lost custody of Kelly and her 4 siblings. All the children were placed in a home for children where they stayed for the next five years. Many people would use these circumstances and think they were owed something in life and have an attitude of entitlement, but not Kelly. She has always been very self-sufficient and taken care of herself and her daughter without much help from anybody while still maintaining a sweet, gentle spirit that is such an inspiration to those around her.

Shortly after Kelly lost her mother to leukemia, she was diagnosed with stage III colorectal cancer. As usual, she seemed to take it in stride and began following doctor's orders and checking them off one by one. She has been through chemo and radiation, tumor resection and now has an ileostomy, and is undergoing more massive amounts of chemotherapy, some of which she receives via transfusion in the doctor's office and the other she infuses herself while at home (yikes!). She deals with all this in her usual carefree way, making those around her laugh and forget at times she even has cancer.

Although Kelly has been blessed with gifts from family, friends and coworkers, when you consider her insurance premium ($411.00 per/mo), doctor, hospital and pharmacy bills, heat, air, car insurance and gas bills, it's hard to fathom how she will survive the financial part of fighting cancer. Some of these bills can be put off until she gets back to work, but some cannot. One day as I was feeling overwhelmed I told Kelly she would be better off if she just quit her job and went on government assistance. Her response, "I couldn't do that." She said that all her life when she was in a pinch financially she would pray to God and that he would provide. She said he would ALWAYS send her an extra job or two that would take care of what she needed. I thought it was so incredible that she had so much faith but I was thinking to myself, "But you can't work right now!" "What is God's plan for you NOW?!" I was talking to another friend of mine, and as I was telling her about this situation she said her hand was literally sitting on the Bible verse Proverbs 31:7,8 which says "Speak up for those who cannot speak for themselves, for the rights of all who are destitute. Speak up and judge fairly; defend the rights of the poor and needy." I thought to myself, I have to be Kelly's voice right now so that is what I was moved to do. What might God move you to do? Pray? Give a financial gift? Both? Maybe something entirely different?

Thank you so much for taking the time to learn about Kelly and her situation. Please remember her in your prayers. May God bless each and every one of you for taking the time to read this story.
