A Journey From the End of the Earth

Give a student from the middle of nowhere a chance to go somewhere...

Your donation will fund four years of private education for a student who will not take the opportunity for granted!

I am a teacher at Olosega Elementary School, located on the tiny island of Olosega in American Samoa.  One of my students would benefit tremendously from your support.  Let me tell you why.

NOWHERE: Tiny Classes

Our 8th grade graduating class has seven students, most of whom have been together for nine years of their primary school education.  Without your support, my student will head to a public high school with an average class size of about 25.

NOWHERE: Tiny School

Our total school population is just over 60 students.  Without your support, my student will head to a public high school with around 1,400 students.  That's more than ten times the population of the entire island (which has approximately 120 full-time residents.).  Whoa!

NOWHERE: Years of love and support

For the past four years, my student has been taught by volunteer teachers who are passionate about education and who truly love their students.  They (we) all have Bachelor's degrees.  Without your support, my student will head to a high school where only 50% of teachers have Bachelor's degrees.

NOWHERE, NO GUIDE:

When this student heads to this relatively large, busy, crowded place, no parent will accompany them.  With younger siblings still in the elementary school, they will live with a sibling on the bigger island.

This student has a specific need because:

-Their family cannot finance a private education.

-They have no siblings currently at the public high school to help them orient, adjust, and navigate.

-Their learning needs and personality lend themselves to a smaller, more intimate education.

-This student passionately wants to go to college.  With American Samoa's public schools placing less that 5% of graduates in college, the odds are not in favor of educational support and success.  If they meet their goals, this student will be a first generation college graduate!

Why is a private education better for this student?

SOMEWHERE: Familiar small class sizes

Pacific Horizons School has class sizes limted to sixteen.

SOMEWHERE: Qualified teachers

All teachers at PHS have Bachelor's degrees or higher.

SOMEWHERE: Proven success in helping students

A strong majority of PHS graduates go to college, with many receiving scholarships to schools in the United States.  PHS was recently recognized by the Congress for their outstanding SAT scores.

SOMEONE:
Please help this student set out on the path that will most likely lead to success.

Please excuse my ambiguity.  My home, Olosega, is a wonderful place full of wonderful people who would probably try to reciprocate or somehow reward someone for this kind of support.  To the best of my ability, I'm trying to lay low and avoid recognition.

If you'd like to lay low while helping a student aim high, please support my cause!

Fa'afetai tele lava (Thank you so much)!
