Help Us In This Fight

Four weeks ago, my mother, Tahereh, was re-diagnosed with stage two breast cancer, after thirteen years of remission. She is an incredible mother of three girls, my sisters and I. Being a single mother, we are her true support system and best friends. These last few weeks have been a very trying time for our family. My mother does not currently work due to illness, and after been diagnosed with breast cancer this has put our whole family under economic hardship. On Feb 28th, we were informed that she will be going through a double mastectomy on Wednesday March 5th in St. Joseph Hospital in southern California.

Just shortly after being diagnosed, my mother knew she would not be able to afford her apartment anymore and would need help financially, emotionally, and medically. She signed off her lease and recently, accompanied by my grandmother, she moved in with my sister. As a family we are striving to do the best we can to get through this difficult time, but our efforts are not enough.

We are really depending on my sisters to work and be able to take care of five individuals' basic necessities, in rent, food, and bills. However, because they have to work full time someone needs to be with my mother as she goes through recovery from her mastectomy. That person is me. I have been trained as a nurse assistant and find it my duty to take care of my mother. I have the basic knowledge to make sure she is well taken care of at home. As a daughter I do not see any one else being able to comfort and help her better than myself and my sisters.

This, however, puts further financial strain on our lives. In order for me to be by my mother's side, I have to leave my home, and job in South Bend, IN. Being out of work while I go back home, will be a financially and emotionally difficult time for all of us.

As many of you would know, being diagnosed with breast cancer comes with many added out-of-pocket expenses not covered by insurance. Expenses such as, additional medications, travel expenses, goods and services to make her as comfortable a person can be going through this illness. We are trying our best to find community resources to help us, but as a family we are still under financial strain.

I never thought I would be writing a letter to ask for help, but we have come at a crossroads in our lives where my family really needs your help. I know many of my friends have been spoiled by my mother's hospitality, kindness, and delicious food, so please take a few seconds to help our family get through this trying time. We want nothing more than my mother to get through her battle with cancer and to be able to create more loving memories.

With Love,

Delaram
