HELLO ANIMAL LOVERS! Thank you for taking a moment to check out our project. This is a page for ISLA ANIMALS, a non-profit organization located on the island of Isla Mujeres, Mexico. We are going to have a FREE, large scale (5 day) SPAY/NEUTER CLINIC & DOG EXPO for the dogs (and cats) of Isla Mujeres. Alison Sawyer Current, the founder of Isla Animals has provided all of the info on the upcoming clinic below. With your support (even with a $5.00 donation), we hope to make it a great success!

Isla Animals Spay/Neuter Details:
A Spay or Neuter at a clinic by Isla Animals is NOT simply the surgery. ALL animals ALSO receive:
*De-worming medicine * Tick removal * Application of Frontline flea and tick medicine * Nail clipping * Hair cut/shave if needed
*Free treatment/medicine for other medical conditions if found
*Isla Animals goes door to door in various neighborhoods prior to clinics to offer and explain the spay/neuter surgeries free of charge. There are also many people without transportation, or crates and Isla Animals volunteers will actually pick-up and drop-off people's pets for them on the day of surgery if they have no other option, or provide them with crates or traps as needed
*Leashes, collars, food, medicine, and flea and tick treatments often go home FREE of charge or at minimal cost to families that could not otherwise afford them

Having all those puppies just kills her at a young age. This is NOT an old dog, but she was worn out when she was rescued off the street with tons of wounds from fighting for food most likely. There is nothing that a female street dog can do when she goes into heat, every male is after her. I can't even imagine what this dog has been through. She just sat there in that chair all day without moving, waiting her turn to be spayed. This momma was lucky to be picked up, spayed and then adopted by a very kind woman, so her breeding days are thankfully over.)
Why is THIS Spay/Neuter Clinic special and what is a Dog Expo?
1- This will be a FIVE DAY Spay/Neuter Clinic that will be FREE OF CHARGE for all dog and cat owners of Isla Mujeres that could otherwise not afford it. In addition, ALL stray dogs and cats we can round up will receive surgeries and after care. The Expo part comes in all the additional services we will provide below. We really want the community to come out and get involved!
2- There will also be a VACCINATION STATION to administer DISTEMPER AND PARVO vaccines as well as other medicines as necessary. The cost will be a small donation (we find that when owners have to pay even 10 pesos, they take greater responsibility in pet ownership, and value the service more than a handout. Our ultimate goal is to create responsibility, involvement, and pride in dog ownership)
3-There will also be a two part BATHING STATION where owners can bathe their dogs with appropriate shampoos-Again, creating involvement of owners. Additionally, there will be a flea and tick dog bath/dip to bathe their dogs (with the help of volunteers). ALL shampoos/flea and tick shampoos/towels will be supplied by Isla Animals free of charge) *ANYONE ON ISLA WITH A DOG CAN BRING THEIR DOG FOR A BATH. THIS IS NOT JUST FOR DOGS THAT ARE RECEIVING SPAY/NEUTER SURGERIES*
4-Isla Animals also wants to have a small table of items for sale at very low cost for pet owners (flea/tick treatment, food, treats, toys, leashes, collars, etc. In the case where someone absolutely cannot afford the smallest donation, they will be given free of charge.
5-Typically, restaurants donate and deliver lunches to volunteers and vets. This time we have asked LOCAL FOOD CARTS and food vendors to come to the clinic to sell sandwiches, tamales, etc. This gets the local community involved, and also allows small business owners to earn money, and see first hand how much care is going into the animals. Having food and drink on site will also encourage owners to stick around, and become involved rather than a quick pick-up and drop-off.
7- There will be an EDUCATION STATION: One for children with coloring books and crayons donated by Isla Animals, and one for adults, which will include education on how to take care of your pet as well as general information for quick and easy solutions for using household items to care for their pet whie keeping costs down
8- We are hoping to have a GROOMER at the clinic who will work for a reduced fee. (All animals that require hair cuts to remove debris and shaves for medical reasons-excessive matting, etc. will be shaved free of charge)
9- The MUNICIPAL OF ISLA MUJERES (local government) fully supports this Spay/Neuter Clinic & Expo. They have donated the location of the Mundaca Palapa, as well as tables and other equipment. They are also promoting the clinic through the local government as well as allowing pet owners to schedule appointments via the Municipal Offices. This is incredible.

Why is your goal $3,800.00?:
Our goal for this Spay/Neuter Clinic & Expo is to perform surgeries on 200 animals. Through our extremely streamlined process we have reduced the cost of surgeries to $20 for a complete Neuter, and $30 for a complete Spay. If we have 100 spays and 100 neuters, our goal should actually be higher: $5,000.00. (And with all of the medicines, vaccinations, flea/tick treatments, collars, leashes, etc. that will be given away, it should be MUCH higher.) However, we are hopeful that with donated supplies/medicines, we can keep the cost of each spay/neuter at a little less than average. We will be thrilled to raise ANYTHING towards our goal amount! If it is possible to reach our goal of $3,800.00, we would love to raise it, however, we make no assumptions and always find a way to get our work done-NO ONE will be turned away.
Why is Spay and Neuter the main focus of Isla Animals?
*Pups born on the street or to poor families that don't care for them and are on their own by the time they are 6-8 weeks old. Their health suffers, they are born into a life of starvation, neglect, aggressive dogs, aggressive people, busy streets in a world that doesn't value them and sees them as a nuisance just for being born.
*Street dog overpopulation means: less food for more dogs - more aggressive dogs fighting for the food that there is - less healthy dogs with skin issues that are even less appealing because they are eating garbage and not enough - more dogs to spread highly infectious and fatal diseases such as distemper - wounded dogs everywhere that become a common sight and therefore it creates less sympathy - they are kicked - hit by cars - in dog fights and on and on...
*There is also a cancerous tumor in Mexico that is sexually transmitted called a TVT. They grow quickly and kill both male and female dogs. If the animals are spayed and neutered than they are not sexually active and will not get this tumor.
*Animals can go into heat at 6 months of age before they are done growing themselves and it sucks everything out of their bodies that they need to grow. (We once trapped a cat that was pegnant and spayed her, she was only going to have one kitten, and probably would not have been able to birth it because she was so weak and she had no teeth because she probably had her first litter too young and it sucked al the calcium that she needed to finish growing and put it into her babies.

And on a positive note, we were happy to get the pups this young before there was anything wrong with them, so they can receive all their vaccines and care, get healthy and strong, get spayed/neutered, and put up for adoption. If even five of them had survived on the streets, they would then begin having their own puppies and on and on...)
What is the history and the effects of Isla Animals' Spay/Neuter campaigns in the local community?:
*After 14 years of our Spay and Neuter Clinics, people are seeing a BIG difference. There used to be wild dogs on the beaches here and these are the survivors. They are smart, fast and impossible to catch. They used to pack up and go after people every once in a while. More sterilization means less puppies & less street dogs, and people are starting to take better care of the dogs they have.
*Street dogs are a health hazard - they spread garbage - defecate in the street - get aggressive-bite people, chase motos - neighborhoods don't want them but, feel helpless to control the situation.
*These neighborhoods originally saw poisoning stray dogs as the solution but, it is such a short term and cruel solution it doesn't work. Six months later new dogs are having new litters, they can't poison them all. Plus, it IS illegal. It kills other creatures, along with pets that have homes and eat the posion on a walk, and leaves dead bodies everywhere causing more of a health hazard
*The normal cycle here was that a family dog had pups, and as soon as the mom stopped cleaning up the poop or the pups required extra food they were boxed up and left in an empty lot. Those that survived learned to live on the street and were rejected and became more fearful and wary and the problem just got bigger and bigger.
*Now that there are less street dogs due to yearly spay and neuter people are seeing an improvement. Children were taught to fear animals but now there are less animals, therefore less danger. And people are objecting to their neighbors putting their dogs in the street. They are seeing that a dog can be respected and trained and walked and cleaned and maybe even brought into the house as a member of the family.

Their mothers had no good food while they were pregnant and no good food while they were nursing. These pups start so far below the normal health line that it takes a lot to save them, many don't make it and they suffer.)

I will be on Isla Mujeres March 10-14-Can I Volunteer at the Clinic?:
Yes, please!!! We welcome with open arms any and all volunteers at this spay/neuter clinic! You do not need any special skills or experience. (We will have our vets and vet techs doing all of the work that requires special training.) But, our volunteers play a huge role in set-up, checking animals in, keeping paperwork in order, walking dogs, bathing dogs, assisting with recovery, and more. If you are hard working, willing, and an animal lover, this is a great opportunity to help the animals and the community of Isla Mujeres. I have volunteered at many clinics and learned so much, as well as had a lot of fun with my fellow volunteers.
How do I sign up to volunteer?:
We are asking for people to sign up for specific shifts of volunteering. 8am-1pm & 1pm-6pm. You may sign up for as many shifts as you like, or just one if you desire. I don't have time to volunteer at clinic, but, can I donate anything during the clinic while I am on Isla Mujeres?:
Yes! We would LOVE people to stop in to donate:
*USED CLEAN TOWELS! These are in HIGH demand and SHORT supply during clinics. Animals are wrapped in towels post-surgery to keep body temperature up during recovery and we ALWAYS need more than we have. And with the addition of a Bathing Station at this clinic, even more than usual will be necessary.
*Soft drinks, gatorade, fruit drinks, bottled water, garafons of water (&plastic cups) are SO appreciated. We have many volunteers and vets working long and hard hours in the heat. It is vital to keep hydrated. People that stop by to donate cold drinks are often the highlight of the day!
*Granola bars, cookies, and other snacks that can be eaten quickly, are also appreciated.
*Crayons for the kids coloring books
*Paper towels, toilet paper, garbage bags, zip ties, duct tape, permanent markers, pens, gauze (3X3 & 4X4), cotton, Q-tips

1 - At Isla Animals. Location: Centro. On the north end there's a convention center (Centro de Convenciones) near Playa Norte, anyone can direct you. Take the brick road to the right of the convention center, you will pass Hotel el Secreto and Hotel Media Luna and then veer to the left. Keep on the same road and turn right before it dead ends. Our house is the big wooden doors, straight ahead. There is a bell to the left of the door: CASA DE LOS VIENTOS. Please put your name, email address, and Spay/Neuter Clinic with your donation so we may add it to the site!
2 - At The Isla Mujeres Artist Fair on Thursday, March 6 in the town square in centro (in front of Super Express), 4pm-7pm. Look for the Isla Animals table. Please put your name, email address, and Spay/Neuter Clinic with your donation so we may add it to the site!
3 - In person in coordination with Sally Margolis, Alison Sawyer Current, Jeff Current, Eileen Reign or Brenda Nash Lamonica.
I will be on Isla Mujeres March 10-14-Can I Volunteer at the Clinic?:
Yes, please!!! We welcome with open arms any and all volunteers at this spay/neuter clinic! You do not need any special skills or experience. (We will have our vets and vet techs doing all of the work that requires special training.) But, our volunteers play a huge role in set-up, checking animals in, keeping paperwork in order, walking dogs, bathing dogs, assisting with recovery, and more. If you are hard working, willing, and an animal lover, this is a great opportunity to help the animals and the community of Isla Mujeres. I have volunteered at many clinics and learned so much, as well as had a lot of fun with my fellow volunteers.
How do I sign up to volunteer?:
We are asking for people to sign up for specific shifts of volunteering. 8am-1pm & 1pm-6pm. You may sign up for as many shifts as you like, or just one if you desire. We ask that you wear clothing you don't mind getting dirty, and comfortable shoes. You may email Bonnie Hamilton, the head of PEACE Isla Mujeres to schedule a shift: volunteer@peace-islamujeres.org

I don't have time to volunteer at clinic, but, can I donate anything during the clinic while I am on Isla Mujeres?:
Yes! We would LOVE people to stop in to donate:
*USED CLEAN TOWELS! These are in HIGH demand and SHORT supply during clinics. Animals are wrapped in towels post-surgery to keep body temperature up during recovery and we ALWAYS need more than we have. And with the addition of a Bathing Station at this clinic, even more than usual will be necessary.
*Soft drinks, gatorade, fruit drinks, bottled water, garafons of water (&plastic cups) are SO appreciated. We have many volunteers and vets working long and hard hours in the heat. It is vital to keep hydrated. People that stop by to donate cold drinks are often the highlight of the day!
*Granola bars, cookies, and other snacks that can be eaten quickly, are also appreciated.
*Crayons for the kids coloring books
*Paper towels, toilet paper, garbage bags, zip ties, duct tape, permanent markers, pens, gauze (3X3 & 4X4), cotton, Q-tips
*We are also looking for someone to sponsor the printing of 100 "coloring books". That is 6 pages per book, or 600 copies. (We can have our volunteers collate and staple them.) [UPDATE 2/28/14 $100.00 DONATION RECEIVED FROM LIZ C. FOR PRINTING OF COLORING BOOKS-THANK YOU!]
