From June 25-29 of 2014 America will be commemorating the 50th Anniversary of Freedom Summer in Mississippi. Veteran elders of the movement, interested participants, organizations and youth from all over Mississippi and the country will be coming to Jackson, MS to celebrate this important moment in our history. Starting on June 23 and going to June 29, youth, ages 12-35, from all over Mississippi and the country will gather in Jackson, MS to honor Freedom Summer and to strengthen the ongoing movement in our communities for fairness, equity and justice!

This "Freedom Summer 50th Youth Congress" will be the largest convening of youth activists in Mississippi since the original freedom summer in 1964. We will not only commemorate this historical moment in history and pay homage to the veterans of the civil rights movement who organized for Freedom Summer "˜64, but this summer's work will also be a national call to action for progressive youth.

Participants at the Youth Congress will be trained on community and youth organizing, and how to build successful and progressive political campaigns and platforms. Sessions will be facilitated by leading organizers from throughout Mississippi and the country. For those from Mississippi, we believe MS is the most fertile ground for change, ranking at the bottom of every statistical category, from labor issues to education and poverty. As it was in 1964: so goes Mississippi, so goes our country. For youth not from MS, we expect the skills built and/or strengthened will allow our peers to go back to any community and be models for radical change. Besides the organizing skills, the focus of the workshops will be substantive in the areas of Education, Criminal (in)Justice, Voting Rights, and Workers Rights. There will be immediate work for youth to engage in Mississippi and beyond.

During the Youth Congress there will also be talent shows with the youth, a massive block party at the historical Smith Robertson Museum, music shows and opportunities for the youth to visit historical locations around Mississippi such as the COFO Center, areas in the Delta and Medgar Evers home.

The organizers of the Freedom Summer 50th Youth Congress want the whole week to be free for all participants, therefore by contributing to the Youth Congress you will offset the costs of food, housing and registration for the youth participants. All contributions go directly to meeting youth needs and NO contribution will be spent on paying anyone's salary or business expenses. ALL contributions are welcome!
