Amani Africa Period Project

Donation protected
~ In Tanzania Menstruation is a taboo topic and many girls miss school during the week of their period.
~ Girls and women who are unable to afford menstrual products often have to resort to use of rags, mattress stuffing, banana leaves, feathers, cow dung and hot coals to manage their menstruation.
~ There is currently very little education for women surrounding Women's health and menstruation.

The Cause: Provide hygiene kits to school girls in rural areas around Arusha, Tanzania. Provide an Educational in-service outlining Growth & Development, Menstrual health, how to use & maintain the hygiene kits, Q&A time ( with translator).

How did this Come about: I was planning a trip to Tanzania and was in communication with Vivian at a local travel agency Armani Africa. I was requesting volunteer opportunities. Vivian informed me that every year her company likes to help further a cause they see affecting the local community. With the recent re-in-statement of the Global Gag Rule she wanted to help with women's health in some way. Vivian suggested sewing re-usable pads and doing education sessions for local schools. I am very excited to be able to partner with Days for Girls to distribute their hygiene kits and use their educational material for the sessions.

For a Tax Receipt:   https://www.canadahelps.org/en/pages/amani-africa-period-project/

Canada Helps website has created a link specifically for this cause. The link above will take you to my page and you will get an immediate tax receipt for your donation. There is no way to link my Canada helps account and my Go Fund me Account so please watch for updates to see what amount is raised up to date.  Thanks so much.

The Hygiene Kit: Re-usable pads, underwear, soap, zip-lock bags, face cloth, storage bag for kit, educational pamphlet.

There will be two varieties of hygiene kit that I will take to Tanzania. The majority of the kits will be from Days For Girls - that I will plan to distribute at the schools ( please see photo and video). The second will be created using the donations I have received from  Party in My Pants Pads, New Moon Pads & Chelsea Faye Designs. The second kits I plan to distribute to teachers. Donation money will go towards purchasing kits from days for girls or buying materials to complete the other kits. 100% of the proceeds will go to the purchase of Hygiene kits.

Want another great way to donate? Buy Re-usable pads at a discount right here! They will be sent to me directly so no extra work for you :)

I travel to Tanzania at the beginning of October and will take a portion of the hygiene kits in a suitcase with me on the flight. The remainder of the kits will be bought in Tanzania at local Days for Girls Enterprises. Local Enterprises teach women how to sew the kits and then they sell the products made to help the women become financially independent.

For More Information on the Global Need for Hygiene Kits: Days for Girls is an organization that has developed an exceptional mission for promoting menstrual health and access to hygiene materials.  Days for Girls website has a wealth of information on it along with a free educational course which I highly recommend. I would encourage anyone who is unable to donate to my cause; or is interested in a long term foundation to support, look into donating to Days for Girls.

About me: I am a RN in a pediatric emergency. I have previously gone on a volunteer trip with YNTA (Young Nurses Take Action) to Nicaragua helping a rural community clinic. I am very passionate about learning from the local community in Tanzania and working with them to meet the needs they have regarding menstrual taboos, menstrual hygiene and education.
