We Need To Change The Way We Build

Donation protected
We could give you a number of reasons why we embarked on this journey, however, we believe there is one reason that stands out above them all. We want to do our part to preserve this beautiful world that we live in. We want to make sure there is a beautiful world for our children to enjoy and their children to enjoy and their grandchildren to enjoy.

As we all know, technology changes overnight. What was ahead of it's time yesterday is behind the times today. So how come home construction is practically the same as it was 50 years ago? Sure we use a little more insulation than we used to but a lot of the materials we now use are actually worse for the environment and a lot of them are even harming our health! For the most part, we still burn fossil fuels to heat our homes too!

We live in under insulated, poorly constructed homes with cheap windows with materials that harm both the environment and our own health... Why?

I don't think it's because we don't care. I think it's just because we don't know. People may think it's too expensive to build to this standard, but if you ask me, it's too expensive NOT to build to this standard. Utility and material costs are only going up. The longer we wait, the more expensive it will be. I truly believe that if we really knew all the facts, we would make different decisions.

That's what this project is about. Working through all the misinformation and picking out the truths. Figuring out the best way to build a home that works with the environment, promotes healthy living and saves us money. It's the investment that will keep on giving!

This house is 1 of only 13 chosen Net-Zero R-2000 projects in Canada selected out of hundreds of entries by Natural Resources Canada to represent the very best-of-the-best for future low-carbon energy-efficient housing in North America.

This project is also a candidate for the following certifications held by Canada's highest quality homes:
- Net-Zero
- Passive House International
- LEED For Homes Platinum
- R-2000

We ran into a couple set backs recently which have affected us financially. Although the site we chose to build on was perfect for positioning the house, it ended up having major soil problems which were costly to fix and delayed the schedule. The delayed schedule then pushed us into the winter months for building which ended up being the worst winter (weather wise) for working outside within the last 10 years.

This is why we are here asking for help. Know that your donation is going towards making this world a healthier place to live and will be helping the environment in more ways than you could possibly imagine. Also, we would be forever grateful if you spread the word about our project so that we can all learn how to build healthier, more sustainable homes.

Please do not hesitate to contact us if you have any questions. You can also check out our blog to follow the project.

Thank you so much for taking the time to read this.
