Help me get to France!

Bonjour! My name is Jacqueline Bert, I am a 21 year old junior at the University of Rhode Island studying Communicative Disorders and hoping to also pursue a minor in French. I have started this page in hopes of raising funds to assist me in participiating in the University's Study Summer Abroad program in Perpignan, France. This program is something that means so much more to me than words can express. Nonetheless, I intend to try to explain my reasons to you in the following paragraphs.

While taking two French electives at URI, I found myself slowly falling in love with both the language and the culture. After being forced away from my studies for over a year, this program would offer me the oppurtunity to throw myself back in full force. Perpignan is located in the South of France. Due to the location, I will not only be able to take two additional French courses, but also experience the culture in a way that no classroom can offer. I will be engaging in cultural tours, excursions, and visiting several French locations including: a tour of Perpignan and the surrounding villages, museum and monument tours, day trips to the Pyranees mountains, beaches, and both Figueres and Barcelona, Spain. Now for the biggest reason for my request. The reason I was taken away from my studies is that in March of 2012 I was diagnosed with an extremely rare cancer. After a brief cold, I was told that I had a rapidly growing osteosarcoma (bone tumor) in my left sinus cavity which was dangerously close to my eye and brain. The diagnosis was terrifying and changed my whole life in a matter of minutes. For over a year I was forced to surrender my independence and postpone my life while I fought my battle with cancer. I went through intensive chemotherapy, radiation, and a handful of surgeries. My family kept a constant vigil and without their support I do not know how I would have survived that year. Their support, as well as that of my medical team at Dana Farber, has truly been invaluable.

As of last week I am one year in remission and my doctors say a medical feat. Slowly, but surely I have returned to my life. Prior to getting sick I planned on spending a semester abroad, however now that I am over a year behind in my studies that is really not an option. This is where I ask for your help. Financially, most of my family's means has gone towards my medical bills/expenses while going through treatment. To be able to spend this one month living out a small piece of my dream would be valuable to me beyond words. Any money from my part time position at a behavioral research company I work for has been set aside to pay for airfare, living costs, and any remaining fees. Anything you could give would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you so much for taking the time to read my story and consider my plight.

Merci Beacoup!
