11 Years ago today my mother was returning home from her antique mall, She was returning home via her usual route. At that same time 4 teenage boys who had been drinking at a party celebrating a friends birthday, left, and began racing down side streets:: they recklessly crossed the same path that invariably and profoundly changed the lives of all involved. The driver was doing 80 mph through a stop sign. My mother was killed instantly and two of the 4 teenagers were also killed. The ripple effect was wide spread and grief filled many hearts.
My mother Jenny McCollum grew up in Everett. She graduated from Everett High, owned 2 successful antique shops in Everett, lived at 2026 Colby Avenue and died in Everett at the intersection of 23rd and Wetmore, four blocks from home. Nothing will bring her or the other 2 boys back. The best that can be done is remembering with love and atone. For the first time I recently connected with the person driving the vehicle, the person that was responsible for the death of my mother and 2 of his friends. It was a long overdue meeting. I am glad it took place, it seems additional healing can occur, and something beyond healing. He is human, someone that made choices, as we all do at times, that had far reaching consequences. His intent that day was not to go out and harm others. I can forgive him for the choices he made that day and I can safely develop a relationship with him due to the unforeseen circumstance that took my mother.
