UGANDA (The African SOUP & Lion's Thread)
Friends and Family,
I am so blessed to announce I have reached my goal of $5,000 for Uganda! God has been incredibly good to me!
However, please feel free to continue to donate if you have not already done so or if you feel called to donate further. Whether unexpected expenses arise or either organization has a dire need, I can promise you that any additional funds will be put to good use. Furthermore, I'd be happy to share with anyone how the support I've raised is being spent/where additional funds would go.

As you may or may not have already heard, I left my job at Ernst & Young in March. After traveling for almost 3 months, I'll be taking 2 positions in Uganda and working for 9 months, for a total of 1 year.
Yes you heard me right: I'm quitting my job and moving to Africa.
But for those of you who supported me/have entertained my stories from my mission trip to Kenya last year, you aren't surprised. You know that I have a great job, but I want to do something more, something different:something that will change people's circumstances. You already know that I've been searching for a way to return to Africa since I got back last June. And with a lot of prayer and an amazing opportunity, I'm able to do it.
So now the fun part: I explain the awesome things I get to do. I will be fulfilling the responsibilities of the following two roles:
Director of Microlending Development
The African SOUP (http://theafricansoup.org/): The SOUP, short for "Sponsorship of Orphans in Uganda Project," is a faith based, non-profit organization started in 2011 in with hopes of providing basic needs such as food, medical care, education, shelter, and clothing to children in the village of Isiti, Uganda, many of whose parents have died of AIDS and have been left parent-less. With God's blessings, the SOUP has expanded. By a LOT. Today, the organization owns and operates a school which serves over 350 children.
In an effort to help bridge the gap between finishing school and autonomously supporting themselves, the SOUP is in the midst of developing a microlending program, by which children can learn how to manage their finances, save for the future, and obtain small loans to help pursue business, further learning, or various other opportunities which wouldn't otherwise be available to them. I will be charged with continuing to develop/lead this program.
Director of Operations
Lion's Thread (http://lionsthread.com/): Lion's Thread is a newly created bow tie company, specializing in supporting the operations of the SOUP and changing the circumstances of the local women who make the ties, while making some notoriously awesome neckwear. I will be leading the development of operations through the management of our seamstresses, our supply chain, quality control, and more.
And finally, the ask part. In case you were wondering during your reading thus far, I am NOT being paid for my work in either of these positions. So now is the time that I must humbly ask for your financial support. But before I do, believe me when I say that your support, however small or large, financially or prayer/encouraging words-based, open or reserved, it doesn't matter. It doesn't matter because any support you give me is support that these two amazing organizations didn't have before. It's lives that maybe wouldn't have been changed, families that wouldn't have been touched, futures that wouldn't have been altered, and definitely necks that wouldn't have looked as dapper, had you not lent your support, in any form or fashion.
So with that said, I tell you that I am covering the following expenses during my year away:
- All airfare/transporation in/out of Uganda
- Immunizations/malaria medicine
- Travel Insurance
And here's what I am asking your help for:
- Food
- Housing
- Utilities
- Internet (which is surprisingly expensive in rural Africa)
- Transportation within Uganda
This comes out to around $550/month for a total of $5,000. Again, yes, you are hearing me right. I plan to live almost a year in Africa on $5,000.
