26 Miles for Don't Be Afraid

Hello there! My name is Zoe Leger and I am a musician & amateur runner based in Halifax, Nova Scotia. On May 18, 2014 I will be running in the Scotiabank Blue Nose Marathon! Not only does this pose an exciting running challenge for me, but it also gives me the opportunity to raise some money for a brand new organization that I feel very passionately about! Check it out:
Don't BE Afraid is an awareness campaign against homophobia based in Nova Scotia, Canada. Don't BE Afraid Mission: Dissolving the fear surrounding homophobia and promoting a deeper level of acceptance of all human beings.
Objectives:
1) Creating a non-judgmental forum for discussing the fear associated with homophobia.
2) Examining fear as experienced by the LGBTQ individual, the homophobic individual, and everyone in between.
3) Using this platform to promote acceptance of individuals in every area of society.
Method: Using art and creativity as the vehicle for promoting acceptance and inspiring change. The Don't BE Afraid message was created by Scott Jones shortly after a hateful attack that left him paralyzed. He and his friend, Katie Roux, discussed a design for the pin that reads 'Don't BE Afraid'. Scott wanted to turn this act of hate into an opportunity to examine and relinquish the fears that surround intolerance. The original message has since evolved into an awareness campaign against homophobia.
The money raised through this fundraising effort will go directly to setting up educational and awareness programs in Atlantic Canada that gets people talking about fears surrounding homophobia, and how to stand up to them. Don't Be Afraid is in the midst of planning a school-based tour across the Maritimes for Fall 2014 and is hoping to eventually extend this tour across Canada!
