Katrina Sonnick is an athletic, friendly, loving, and compassionate 11 year old girl.  Just like many 11 year olds, she enjoys school, cooking and is a competitive cheerleader. Unlike most 11 year olds, Katrina suffers from Juvenile Nephronophthisis- a very rare kidney disease, with only 9 cases for every 8.3 million people. She was diagnosed, accidentally, when she was 6 years old after a bad stomach illness had her hospitalized. This disease is a progressive, chronic disease for which the sole treatment is a Kidney Transplant. There is no cure. Katrina has done well on medications, to try to delay the surgery for the past 5 years- battling Anemia, high blood pressure, high uric acid and mineral absorption issues. However, the time has ultimately come where medications will no longer suffice and surgery is the only option. Katrina is headed to Boston Children's Hospital this year to begin the lengthy transplant process which will result in her family of 6 relocating to the city for at least two months from NY. Since Katrina's step father is her donor, the family will have both family members hospitalized and he'll be out of work while recovery is taking place. This fund is being set up to offset the enormous cost of this procedure and the mandatory, lifelong anti rejection medications Katrina will need to keep her new kidney. To know Katrina is to love her, and her grateful family thanks you all for the love and generosity you have shown their little girl.
