Thunderstruck Play At The Edinburgh Fringe 2019

THUNDERSTRUCK

When I was a teenager I saw Gordon Duncan play the bagpipes, his music changed me and made me fall in love with pipes and Scottish Folk music. It is a moment that has never left me. When, in 2017 I lost my dad to Cancer I found myself depressed and I did the only thing I thought I could do, I wrote a play. Initially, it was just a good excuse to sit in coffee shops but 12 months later I found I had written a play about the transformative power of music, more specifically about the night a teenage boy watched a bin man from Perth change the world.

From that point all we had to do was convince Scottish theatres that what the world needs right now is a play about bagpipes! It took us two years, but finally “Thunderstuck” is coming to Edinburgh for a full run at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival 2019!

Thunderstruck’s journey to the fringe has been unconventional to say the least. After it sold out preview performances in Dunfermline and London, we were invited to perform at the Piping Live! Festival in Glasgow, only the second theatrical play ever to be invited to perform at the festival of bagpipes that surrounds the world pipe band championships. Brilliantly the play was performed on the stage in which the finale of the production is set. But it was our final two previews at The Tron Theatre in Glasgow, as part of the folk festival Celtic Connections, where those in Scottish theatre realised that we had put together something far greater than just a play about bagpipes.

We had a play about Scotland, about music, about genius, about redemption and about how those from the most humble back grounds can change the world. In the weeks following Celtic Connections we received multiple offers to take the play forward. We have now accepted an offer from Assembly Festival to have our press night at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival 2019 in their 240 seater Assembly Checkpoint venue.

We were unsuccessful in securing ‘Made in Scotland’ funding after they unfortunately didn’t make it to the Tron Theatre to see us, but this is where you come in. We are looking for donations, however small, to make sure our band and production team get paid and have a roof over their head during the festival. You’ll also be helping us market the show, making sure as many people as possible come to see us. However small your donation you’ll be part of the team that makes Thunderstruck’s 2019 Edinburgh Fringe run happen!

To everyone who decides to contribute we are enormously grateful to you for helping “Thunderstruck” become the smash hit, runaway success story of the Edinburgh Fringe 2019.

Best
