Here we go...
This post is about my dad. He’s been sick my entire life but the past few years have been on a steady decline. Doctor after doctor has given hope to our family only to later turn in to disappointment because whatever remedy they suggested ended up not being sufficient or an adequate form of therapy. The doctors here in Oklahoma finally admitted that there was nothing further they could do for my dad and they referred him to the world renowned Mayo Clinic.
A few weeks ago my dad flew to Rochester Minnesota for a week long stay and a plethora of testing. He came back to Tulsa but was told he was wanted back for yet another week of testing. It was discovered that both valves of my dads heart are leaking (amongst other things).
The doctors at the Mayo Clinic also came to the conclusion that there is no further help they can give my dad EXCEPT add him to the heart transplant list.
As of yesterday my dad signed the paper work to be added to the recipient list.
My parents come back from Minnesota tomorrow but my dad is needed back again (for another week of more tests) in a few weeks.
Most people know, he could be on the list for a month before he receives a heart...or he could be on the list for a year+.
My family is hopeful, considering this the final shot we have for my dad to be able to lead a normal and healthy life. However, we also know it will be a very long road ahead of us as well. The reality is-we will be rejoicing for an organ that another family is grieving over because they’ve lost a loved one. Once my dad receives a new heart, he will have to live in a rehabilitation facility for at least 3 months to make sure his body doesn’t reject it.
This is just a little bit of information, but an update of what is actually going on in our lives.
I’m asking for continued thoughts and prayers for my dad and mom.
And most importantly, if you haven’t ever looked in to being a donor, maybe add it to your list of things to do. It could honestly save someone’s life. If you’re already a donor, thank you!
