Britton and Kai Larkin

On Friday, February 14, Valentine's Day, a heart-wrenching tragedy fell upon the Larkin family. Britton Larkin, a nurse at SMH, was tending to her patients when she received an unthinkable phone call. The police wanted to speak with her in regards to her husband, Steve Larkin, but would not give any information over the phone. Seconds seemed the minutes and minutes seemed like hours before the police arrived on the unit. They were accompanied by the Chaplain. They had come to inform Britton that her husband had been killed in an auto accident. The first question from many of the staff was, "where is Kai?" Thankfully, their 2 year old son was safe at daycare.

The news was surreal to all of us. Complete shock. There are no words to express what we were all feeling. All we could do was cry for the hurt we felt for our friend. We hugged tight to Britton and did a prayer with the Chaplain.

As the days pass the questions don't cease for many of us. When something like this happens what does one do? Where does one go from here? The one you thought you would spend the better part of your years with is now gone. How do you explain to your son that daddy isn't coming home? The biggest question.....WHY? The world just stopped in the blink of an eye.

Fortunately, for those of us who know Britton, we know she is a strong, resilient young woman. She is sensative, compassionate, and has a heart of gold. She has a sense of humor that will help to carry her through some very difficult times. Best of all, she remains with a piece of her husband in her son, Kai. Steve Larkin may have been taken from this world much too soon but his memory lives on.

Collectively, we will help Britton and Kai through the most difficult time of their lives. We will be there to laugh and cry with her. We will be there to pick her up when she is down.

We wanted to help ease the stress on Britton as she finds her way back to some form of normalcy. When you go home tonight hold tight to your loved ones and say a prayer for Britton, Kai, and the Larkin family. We truely never know when our time will come to an end.

The staff of 6ET would greatly like to thank everyone who came together in our time of need so we could be there to support Britton.
