Community Aid Liberia

I am a Liberian blessed to now live in America as a citizen.  I was born into poverty by separated parents. Neither of them was able to read as they were too poor to attend school. When I was six months old, my father left home and my mother gave me up to an uncle in a distant jungle. My uncle David was a bushman who hunted for a living, and I regarded him as my hero. This way of life was all I knew. There were no schools in the jungle, and I lived a life according to the customs of my village.

When I was 8, I saw my parents for the first time. They visited our village and seized me, bringing me back to Monrovia for schooling. Though sad to leave my uncle, the only family I had known, I was optimistic about a new life in the city. It wasn’t long, however, before my father sent me to live with another family, the Emmons’s, who lived two and a half hours out of town, that I might learn to be the “bookman” of the family. Mr. Emmons was a teacher and community organizer in Buluma and its surrounding villages. He took in village kids for training but worked them for hard labor to compensate for the costs of food, education, and daily essentials. Soon life became morally repulsive again, as beating and hard labor were the norm. But God stepped in–again!

My life changed when a missionary couple, the Drevlows, settled into our village to do Bible translation. Through them I began attending summer camps: AWANA and Scripture Union specifically, which gradually changed my life, building up my self-esteem until

I began to believe in myself.  I came to know that I was unique and capable of moving on to a new level. I began to learn, and after completing middle school, I was glad to move out and live a satisfying, self-reliant life.

So you see, Poverty couldn’t hold me down!  I fled war-torn Liberia as a refugee in 1996. It felt that I was destined to die as I walked among the stray bullets of rebel combatants in the heat of my country’s civil conflict, but God rescued me and set me apart.
Today I am the only college graduate of my thirty-six siblings. Today I am married with two children. Today I am very grateful. I have forgiven my parents and do not feel bitter about my past. Those days are gone and ALL things have been made new!

I want to give back to the community I left many years ago so I am attempting to build a school for the children.  Your contribution of $10.00 will purchase one bag of cement which will create 30 bricks towards that school.  EVERY penny will go towards the effort to build this school and educate children.

Thank you for considering this project.
