Food Warriors

The city of Chicago has 500,000 people living in food deserts and 400,000 unable to access healthy foods. This is where the food warriors step in. To help make a difference in all of these lives and more we have come together to volunteer for the Night Ministry. Three times a month we follow  the Night Ministry health van to low income neighborhoods in the city. While they provide minor health services and social services we provide food and emotional support to the neediest population in Chicago. Our meal service is on the street, no matter what the weather, and we supply a hot meal and a to go bag filled with another meal and home baked goods. Each meal and to go bag costs approximately $4.00 for volunteers to put together. We serve over 100 people each month and the numbers-and therefore,  the out of pocket expenses- are rising due to word of mouth.   Every hot meal includes chicken, potato and a vegetable along with a bread. The to go bags include a sandwich, chips or healthy bars, homemade cookies, juice and fruit. The drink of the day depends on the weather lemonade in the summer and hot chocolate and coffee in the winter. A bottle of water is always supplied. As the crowd grows so do the families that bring their children. At the end of the line we have lollipops and icecream or some special treat for the children. Each and every person is so appreciative and the children are so excited to see candy and ice cream. The rewards to the Food Warriors has been unlimited. To know you are helping to provide food for those with very little and to receive the smiles and hugs of those in such need cannot be duplicated. We need your help.  Each day of serving can cost up to $500. and the volunteers needed can exceed 5each time we go out.
