WHAT IS BEMEL FOUNDATION (UK)?
Bemel Foundation UK is the overseas face of Bemel Medical Mission a non- profit, non-governmental organisation set up in africa to provide high quality care to those who need it the most but are least able to afford it.
Bemel celebrates 24 years of independent running this 2014.

WHY ARE WE RAISING MONEY?
We are a raising money to provide life-changing surgery for poverty-stricken women in Gambia who suffer from an embarrassing condition called VVF.

WHAT IS VVF?
VVF stands for 'Vesico-Vaginal Fistula'. Vesico-Vaginal Fistula means Bladder-Vaginal Hole in lay mans terms, and means exactly that, an abnormal hole between the bladder and vagina. This means that urine passes uncontrollably from the bladder and out the vagina at free will (also known as incontinence).
Recto-Vaginal Fistula would be the same thing except that the hole is be between the anus and the vagina causing a similar experience except with faeces. Some women suffer from both and we want to do something about it. These conditions come under the title of 'Obstetric Fistula'.

HOW DO OBSTETRIC FISTULA'S HAPPEN?
Obstetric fistula is an injury of childbearing that has been relatively neglected, despite the devastating impact it has on the lives of many girls and women. In the western world such a condition is practically unheard of but that is due to the availability of free healthcare at our beck and call.

Obstetric Fistula is usually caused by several days of obstructed labour, without timely medical intervention - typically a Caesarean section to relieve the pressure. The baby usually dies, and the woman is left with chronic incontinence.

WHAT EFFECT DOES THIS HAVE ON THE FEMALES WHO SUFFER FROM THIS CONDITION?
The consequences of fistula are life shattering. For a female in this condition her inability to control her flow of urine and/or faeces, often leaves her abandoned or neglected by her husband and family and also ostracised by her community.
She is usually outcasted and kept well away from community dwellings as she is seen as unfit, unwanted and useless in society. Without treatment, her prospects for work and family life are greatly diminished, and she is often left to rely on charity.
We at Bemel Foundation UK believe that we can make a differences to the lives of those suffering day and night from this nightmare of a condition.

WHAT ARE WE DOING?
We plan to send over about 16 doctors/medical staff from the USA/UK and AFRICA over to a town called Bwiam in Gambia, Africa for one week to perform surgery on at least 50 people FOR FREE.

We hope to also perform side operations for those suffering from hernia, cataracts and minor injury cases although our main focus will be VVF.

This will cost alot of money and thats why we need your help...

HOW MUCH ARE WE RAISING & WHERE WILL IT BE GOING?
We aim to raise £20,000 to cover the costs of:

1 - Travel, accomodation and food for our 16 medical expertise
2 - Equipment and medication that will be needed to perform the surgeries for patients

*We plan to carry out this mission within a week. Our surgeons & medical staff are willing and ready to help out for free as long as general upkeep is covered (as listed in point 1). These staff will not be paid at all for their efforts. This where we need your help...

HOW WILL WE RAISE THE FUNDS?
To raise money Bemel Foundation Uk will be doing a series of events over the next coming months:

- Cake Sales
- Spinathons
- A sponsored 10-mile Charity Walk (West to East London)
- Charity Event

- You can help us by holding your own event to help out
