Ebbie's Emergency

Last week, at 2 a.m. on a Sunday morning, our little 11-year-old lab mix collapsed. Ebbie fell out of her beanbag chair (that she always sleeps on when we watch TV on the porch), and started to crawl across the room, unable to stand, and struggled to breathe.
Our only option was to rush her to Tufts.
The situation was dire, as we quickly learned that she was bleeding internally from a tumor that had ruptured. The only option for survival was emergency surgery. And usually, the type of tumor she had is cancer. We had to make a snap decision, and did what anyone who loves their pets would do. She had a chance. We had to do what we could.
Three blood transfusions, an emergency surgery to remove a huge mass on her spleen and intensive care for three days, left us with a bill that climbed to nearly $5,000.
But we did the right thing. Not only did she "do better than most dogs after this surgery," but the biopsy report was benign. Also, very rare. She survived, and she will now be fine.
I have spent years raising money for animals in need, and now I find myself more than ever before in need to help one of our own pets.
While Maura is employed, I was recently laid off. It's terrifying.
Quite a few friends urged me to create a donation page. Reluctantly, I am doing so. It goes against every fiber of my being to ask for money. But I figure, if you'd buy me a beer, maybe you could toss a few bucks into the can instead. Really. A buck or two here and there will help. And I can only hope that we can return the favor should any of you need it.
Disclosure: later this year, you'll notice Maura and I will be jetting off to Italy. I point this out because I know if someone asked for money and then went on a trip, I'd raise an eyebrow. Maybe both brows. That trip, which is a birthday celebration for my beloved aunt, as well as a honeymoon for us, was paid for last year by our wedding (monetary) gifts. In no way would money donated to us for a cause be used for anything else but the cause. Just like with Pet Rock, you can count on my honesty. Every penny goes where it is supposed to go.
