Julie's Africa Volunteer Trip

Dear Friend,

This July, I traveled to Africa on a volunteer mission with the Maywood (NJ) Rotary Kenya project, where I worked with Maasai school children who live on a reservation in Southern Kenya.

To say that this experience was transformative would be an understatement. People in this part of Kenya live without consistent access to clean water, in a climate prone to droughts and with limited or no medical care. All too often, children in Kenya die of preventable illnesses related to dehydration and malnutrition.

As part of my work, I helped to conduct a census, which allowed me to visit some of the "bomas," or villages, in the Maasai Mara area. I saw very young girls who were already mothers, kids who were unable to attend primary school because they were needed at home to help with herding or childcare and school children who desperately wanted to continue their education but could not afford the $2,000 necessary to attend high school for four years.

I also saw dozens of kids, not very different from us, who understood that the best ticket out of a life of poverty was an education.

I returned home very determined to help in any small way I could.

On Friday, August 8th at 7 PM, a few of my fellow volunteers and I are hosting a low-dollar fundraiser to raise money for scholarships to help some of these children attend high school.

The event is taking place at Lobby Lounge,
214 N 11th Street, Brooklyn

Our suggestion contribution amount is $25 but anything you can afford -- from $10 to $10,000 -- will go such a long way towards helping these children.

As the mom of a 2 year old boy, I know how blessed I am that my son doesn't have to worry about having access to schools, clean water or a meal. In my small way, I would like to ensure that every other child has access to these same basic staples.

Thank you for helping provide these children with a better education and a better quality of life.

I look forward to seeing you on August 8th.
