My 13 month old son William is getting to the age where he wants to walk, but he has dystonia, and is mild on the spectrum for cerebral palsy. This means he will not be able to begin walking without custom AFO [ankle-foot orthosis] braces. He has muscles that are "high tone"- they will fight against braces if we don't relax them with botox.
I want to help him walk, and to give him the best shot he can have at moving through life more easily, but I don’t have the funds to get him this time sensitive treatment promptly. AFOs and [especially] botox injections are very expensive. Injections will be recurring every 4-6 months.
Why is this time sensitive? William's symptoms are the result of neurological issues. Relaxing these high tone muscles, and correctly guiding William's posturing with AFOs can actually remap neural pathways in his brain. As he is already standing and cruising- it is crucial that these therapies begin immediately.
For those of you who know me well- you are aware of my husband's court case, and the financial impact it has had on our lives- especially in the last year. We have been living off of credit, and I am unable to move forward with my son's treatments. These treatments can not be put off any longer.
We also recently discovered through a CT that William's brain is developing asymetrically. CT scans are low resolution. I've now been advised by William's neurologist that an MRI can give us future therapy-guiding information about his brain damage. MRIs are also expensive.
Estimated cost of Botox: $4,000.00 Estimated cost of MRI: $1,000.00 Estimated cost of braces: $1,500 These costs will likely be higher, and William will likely need to be cast for new orthotics with each significant growth spurt. This goal will ensure that I am able to begin this process while we sort out our financial issues. We are working hard on it, but I would appreciate any help to give William the best possible outcome.
