Haiti Pro Bono Spring Break Trip

On behalf of Boston College Law School, Kevin Bergin,Jennie Davis, Tahirah Dean, Hannah Marie Farhan, Graham Markiewicz, Chris Pinto, and I will travel to Haiti from March 1-9, 2014, to conduct research for the Institute for Justice and Democracy in Haiti (IJDH). IJDH seeks to restore the Haitian rule of law and democracy in the short term, while working toward effectuating the long-term sustainable changes necessary to ensure Haitian democratic stability. This is accomplished in part by investigating human rights violations in Haiti, and issuing reports to the international human rights community.
Through IJDH, we are being delegated the research and writing of a shadow report concerning the living conditions and extrajudicial evictions of internally-displaced Haitians due to the January 2010 Earthquake. The report will document the abhorrent conditions of the displacement camps along with the violent and inhumane actions of the Haitian government and self-proclaimed landowners who are illegally forcing the eviction of the displaced Haitians. Through our report, which we expect to be published and presented at a UN summit in Geneva in October 2014, we hope to promote awareness of these violations of Haitian and international human rights standards that continue to take place everyday.
We will also have the opportunity to collaborate with the first class of students attending the Université de la Fondation de Aristide Faculty of Law and Political Science (UNIFA), a law school partnering with U.S. academics to train Haiti’s next generation of lawyers. Collaborating with UNIFA law students gives a distinctly Haitian legal perspective regarding the violations of the Haitian and international human rights standards in the displacement camps.
Boston College Law School faculty member Kathleen Devlin-Joyce and IDJH advising attorney Nicole Phillips will be in Haiti to assist our delegation in preparing for and conducting interviews, as well as the organization and preparation of the report.
Having already received $4,200 of our $8,200 projected budget via a grant from the Clough Center for the Study of Constitutional Democracy, we turn to any sympathetic donors to help off set our remaining costs. All donations will be used to pay for transportation, housing, and translator services during our trip.
