Pete Winslow's Team USA Journey

My name is Pete Winslow and I am a member of Team USA, the US national power soccer team.  Born a congenital amputee, without legs or a right hand and with only 3 fingers on my left hand, I doubted that I would ever play a competitive sport, as my older siblings did.  When I was 13 years old, I was introduced to the sport of power soccer and my life has never been the same.

Power soccer is the first competitive team sport developed specifically for power wheelchair users.  In power wheelchair soccer, as in the able-body game, the World Cup is the highest level at which any soccer athlete may compete.

Over the past 8 years I have competed as a member of my local Minnesota power soccer teams, having won 3 national championships.

In 2009 I tried out and was chosen for the 2011 National Team. I am proud to say that, as a member of that team, we won the 2011 World Cup, played in Paris, France.  Representing my country and winning USA’s 2nd World Cup championship is something I will never forget. 

I am honored to say that I have once again been selected to the USA National Power Soccer Team. We will be competing for an unprecedented 3rd World Championship in 2016. Over the past year, we have had team training camps in Indianapolis, Arizona, and Minnesota.  We have less than a year prior to the opening ceremonies of the World Cup, with many more training camps and hours of individual practice still ahead of us in order to become the best we can be to successfully defend our World Cup title.

All of the athletes on the National Team are self-funded, meaning we must raise our own individual support.  Funds raised help to cover the cost of travel to/from the training camps and the World Cup, as well as the cost of food and lodging at the training and competition venues.
