Volunteer Trip

Donation protected
Dear friends and family,

Arbor Hospice has been assisting a hospice in Malawi Africa called Matunkha Centre with financial contributions by our employees. A group of us are forming plans to make a trip there to better assess their needs in order to better support them. While Arbor Hospice has given us their blessing on this endeavor, they are not helping us in the way of money or time. Each of us are taking personal vacation time and paying expenses with our own money. This is were I am of need of help myself.

While Chuck and the kids are willing to give me up for 10 days and use my vacation time, we do not have the resources to finance the trip. I have been in contact with the United Methodist Church, Madonna University (where I earned my degree in Hospice and Palliative Care) and now I am reaching out to you.

I am trying to raise $3000.00 to cover most of my expenses (the flight alone is $2500.00). Any money above and beyond that will be donated directly to Mantankha Centre, or used to purchase items for me to take with me to be donated.

Paul Arnold, one of our Spiritual Care Coordinators has been communicating via email with Hilde, who works at Matankha Centre and is helping us coordinate this trip. She wrote the following note to Paul:

"At this point in time most attention is going to the client, but my wish is to involve also partners and children in the councelling. If I am right, you as Arbor have experience in how to work with children and help them deal with grief. I hope you can learn us how to approach family and children. Of course there are some cultural aspects which might be different, which can be very interesting to your team as well."

This is were I can be of help to them. I will be working with the Social Worker teaching them how to help children process the grief they have experienced. As you know, the Aids epidemic has hit Africa hard, and many children have lost their parents. There is an orphanage nearby we will be visiting, as well as visiting families in their homes. Please help me by donating money for this trip. Your help is greatly appreciated.
