MTA Memorial for MA Chartrand

Marc-Alexandre Chartrand played what would become an integral role in uniting the Mount Allison University community starting from when he first set foot on campus in August, 2008, to graduating with Honours in International Relations alongside the Class of 2012. His involvement with the Model United Nations, writing for the independent student newspaper The Argosy, and acting as President of Bermuda house are only a select few of the ventures Chartrand dedicated his time and energy to. But the most notable of these commitments was his dedication to the Mentorship Program. Chartrand participated as a mentor every year he was at Mount Allison University, helping international students acclimatize themselves to the university and town of Sackville, N.B.

Chartrand was studying in China and was working towards opening an ESL school at the time of his death in the spring of 2013.

Over the last year, family and friends within Chartrand's extensive network have been brainstorming ways to pay tribute to his life and influence. It was recently decided that a maple tree would be planted on the Mount Allison University campus in the spring of 2014, and an award would be established within the Mentorship Program. The mentor who exhibits profound leadership, creativity, and dedication to the goals of the program will receive an engraved plaque that reads: "The Marc-Alexandre Chartrand International Mentorship Award."

The fundraising goal of $3500 CAD by Friday, March 28, 2014 is in conjunction with the Mentorship Banquet where the first award in Chartrand's name will be announced. The amount listed is mainly to offset the costs associated with the maple tree because producing the plaques for the Mentorship award will not be too costly. (As of yet, there is no monetary value attached to the award.) Besides purchasing, transporting and planting the tree, we are hoping to have an engraved plate at the base of the tree with Chartrand's name and a quote from one of his favorite authors, Albert Camus. That is what the majority of the fundraising money will be going towards.

If any extra donations are made, they will be collected for the sole purpose of helping to finance "The Marc-Alexandre Chartrand International Mentorship Award" in the future.

Please help the friends and family of MA Chartrand reach the fundraising goal so that Chartrand's legacy may be commemorated at Mount Allison University. Every little donation would help and is monumentally appreciated.

Thank you.
