Nicci's Superhero Journey

Last year my eyes and heart were opened to the world of Reactive Attachment Disorder and like Attachment issues. Before April I had known a little but not much and it really didn’t have any heart connection. I had the privilege to go train and volunteer at one of Nancy Thomas’s Family Healing camps. I can tell you that it wasn’t just the families and children that walked away changed. I personally will never forget the moment when parents came to me in desperation because the child they loved was destroying the family life. In that moment I understood that the neglected and abused could become the abuser yet these awesome parents were holding on to the lives of the on that was hurting them, with a grip so tightly it was putting them closer to the fire. As if I had an AHA moment I knew what the need for a rest meant. You see these families are drained. They are drained emotionally, physically, and financially. They have nothing left to give and yet somewhere deep down the still give. Well I want to give them a break,a rest,a time to recharge so they can power through in this heart growing experience. I’m not in a position to foster or adopt but I am in the position to support these awesome parents as they fight for the lives of their children. Here’s the deal. I’ve reached the point where I’m doing some respite work and I am enjoying (hmm is that the right word for when a child is screaming at the top of their lungs that they hate you) every minute of the challenge. However I’m still very limited in ages I’m comfortable taking on,confidence in certain aspects, and my tool box is only half way full. I need more training so that I can have confidence and the ability to help the families I work with and not bring harm. I have a vision of being available all summer, holidays, and some weekends to provide a break for these families of RAD kids. Eventually I’d like to be able to pass on what I know to others. So as it stand I need more training. There are two trainings coming up. One in Colorado with Nancy Thomas, it’s the last of its kind. Then there is one in the spring in Canada with Karen Poitras and Nancy Thomas, it’s the first of its kind. Both are expensive but worth every penny. These trainings will not only give me the knowledge I need along with the hands on learning to move forward but also will put me on the list for families to contact. Will you help me help the parents continue the fight of a life time? I’d love to share more information with you about Reactive Attachment Disorder and how you can educate yourself as well. Could you be a superhero in someone’s life?
