Jo Day dystonia mattress

Donation protected
Jo lives with quite a rare neurological condition called Post-traumatic Dystonia. She developed it when she was 15 when it was triggered by a simple fall and has now battled with the condition for the past 27 years. She has undergone in excess of 90 operations to help control the contorted positions the Dystonia forces her body into, including 6 operations on her brain. She could have easily allowed this condition to control her life but her determination and optimistic character always shines through. It doesn’t matter how bad a day is, or if she is in agony, she’s always got her trademark smile and cheeky sense of humour on show. She lives with pain 24/7 and has to cope with an extensive medication regime but this has never prevented her from appreciating other people’s problems and doing everything in her power to help them.

After trying to adapt and accommodate this condition, Joanne finally needs some help to get the medical equipment she needs. One of Joanne’s problems is that her neck pulls to the left-hand side and has caused her left ear to rub against itself and she now has an ulcerated pressure sore which is nearly full depth. If she cannot get onto her side in bed she will have a permanent hole in her ear and risks loosing the whole of her ear because it is also infecting the cartilage around the hole. Due to the deformities caused by her Dystonia she cannot sleep on her right-side to alleviate the pressure on her left ear without this specialist mattress, which can adapt, accommodate and adjust to the abnormal positions and spasms she experiences whilst in bed. This would be greatly beneficial for easing her intolerable pain levels and enable her to sleep. The NHS have refused to fund the mattress that will meet her needs, so in sheer desperation, we are going to try and raise the money required to purchase this mattress and give Joanne what most people take for granted a nights sleep, get her off taking antibiotics everyday to help prevent the ear infection getting worse and allow the ear to heal and stop the risk of her losing her ear.

We are aiming to raise £15,000 This will buy Joanne this specialist Dolphin mattress and include maintenance for a period of 5 years. Please let’s all come together and support a young lady who has so much courage and determination, coupled with an attitude that nothing can beat her.
