Disaster Risk Reduction Project in Haiti

Donation protected
Since 2011, Dr. Janet Lin, Professors of Global Health Challenges and Successes at the University of Illinois at Chicago, leads a team of UIC Masters Candidates and health professionals to Haiti to continue work on developing a more sustainable approach to building community resilience. Working side by side with local partners, the team has developed a disaster risk reduction training program that teaches community members how to assess and mitigate their neighborhood's vulnerabilities, develop emergency action plans, and engage neighbors, family members, and friends in disaster risk reduction activities.

This March, we will be heading to Delmas and Belair communities to continue developing these strategies.
Projects we will be doing include:
"¢ Furthering the leaders' facilitation of skills
"¢ Expand the trainings to other neighborhoods
"¢ Help develop emergency action plans for families &                   communities

Due to lack of available scholarships within the College of Education, I am seeking out assistance for this project. I will be given independent study credits that will go toward my specialization in International Youth Development.
Your support will help cover:
      "¢ Transportation
"¢ Vaccinations and emergency evacuation insurance
      "¢ Hotel and lodging

Children and youth are some of the most affected during/after natural disasters. As the only Youth Development student selected, I see this as a great opportunity to utilize the skills and theories I have learned in my previous course work and provide insight on how youth can be seen as assets to reduce risks after disasters.
