We want to thank everyone who has reached out to the Johnson family and the Rogers family with your love, unspeakable kindness, and support. We are truly blessed to have each and very one of you in our lives.
From the moment our daughter Shelby became pregnant with her and Travis's second child, it has been a roller coaster of uncertainty. She had been seeing multi Dr's including a High Risk OB Dr.. It was a daily struggle with ongoing pain, bleeding, and the baby growing very low in the uterus. At times, we didn't know if we had a healthy baby, if the baby would abort on his own, or go full term. Her father and I have feared we'd lose Shelby knowing the complications were constant, but she choose to continue the pregnancy hoping and praying for a positive outcome not allowing herself to think of the opposite.
On Saturday August 25th, our worst fear that labor had started were realized when the high risk OB Dr examined her. Because she was only 25 weeks pregnant she was unable to feel the contractions as they where happening. Even the monitor wasn't showing them. The Dr's were upfront with Shelby and Travis about the baby's survival rate - 25% at best. Terrifying to say the least. They were able to stop the contractions for a day and a half until the morning of Monday, August 27. Because the baby had suddenly turn around over night and was breech, Shelby was 4 cm dilated, and the water sac was protruding, a mad rush to prepare Shelby for a c-section ensued before her water broke. A tiny 2 lb baby Jackson Kenneth Johnson arrived 15 weeks earlier than his due date. As the baby was rushed off to the NICU, Shelby was in that 3 percent of young women who ended up hemorrhaging after the placenta was delivered and lost over half her body's blood supply in a matter of minutes. A Code Crimson was called over the hospital PA. Shelby's mother in law Rolanda and I watched in horror as nurses and Drs rushed in to the delivery room. In order to save her life she required a emergency hysterectomy. This most certainly wasn't in the plans for the future. But the kids have handled it beautifully and Shelby is doing very well.
In the first couple of days, Baby Jackson lost a quarter of his body weight and has had several episodes where he stops breathing. But he is still doing amazingly well. We pray each day he continues to gain weight and grow stronger like his big brother Jameson.
As you know the medical care for Jackson will be ongoing. He will be required to stay in the hospital for up to 15 weeks - until his expected due date of December 7th. His great great grandmother Pate’s birthday.
The outpouring of love and support has been overwhelming. So many of Shelby and Travis's dear friends and family members have asked how they can help, can they donate, or what they can do in the mist of this very unexpected turn of events. So rather than have a traditional baby shower, Shelby and Travis have expressed their desire to accept donations to go toward their ever growing medical bills (two high deductibles, copays, & expense related the the baby’s hospital stay) knowing that baby Jackson has a uphill battle and a very long stay in the NICU until he is healthy and strong enough to come home.
