Prosthetics & Medical bills for SaraMae

Everything was going great in SaraMae's life when she began having unexpected, severe back pain. The pain was so excruciating that she went to the ER in the middle of the night. The hospital gave her an IV of fluids and something for the pain and they believed it to be sciatica. It wasn't but the next night that Sara told her mom that she thought she was dying. Sure enough, almost instantly, she began to go into septic shock and all of her organs were shutting down. They had to intubate her, and put her on life support and in a medically induced coma. The doctors told her family to make arrangements for her loved ones to say their last goodbyes. She was not expected to live. Her blood pressure was barely at a life sustaining level, and they had to place her on three vasopressors which keep the blood flow localized to the heart rather than through the whole body. Because of this, she lost blood flow to her hands and feet. Her hands recovered, but her feet did not. Sara had to relearn how to do everything: swallow, eat, hold a fork, and type. For a period of time, they did not think she would talk or be able to use her arms again. She fought through all the deficits and left the hospital six weeks after she went in. Sara went into the hospital as a 117 pound athlete with almost no body fat, ballooned up to 160 pounds with liquid oozing through her skin when her kidneys shut down, and then down to 88 pounds once she got home because she was not tolerating her medication well. Her poor body went through hell. She got severe pneumonia, had acute kidney failure requiring life-saving dialysis, suffered a heart attack, she was in a coma, on life support with a feeding tube. Her stories of what she experienced while in a coma break your heart. She is truly a miracle. Sara was a student and an athlete and did not have insurance. It was one of the sacrifices she made so that she could finish her degree. She never thought she would need it. Because of this she is unable to receive the care she needs. We have watched her struggle as she tried to fight for her recovery, tried to get adequate care so that she can return to her former state, or as close to it as possible.


After nearly a year of unsuccessful therapies to save her lower legs, Sara had to have her legs amputated and she needs extensive rehab after being in a wheelchair for over a year. She has more fight in her than most people. She fought the odds to live, she fought to regain her life once before, and she will fight to not only return to her former state, but to exceed it.

It is not like Sara to ask for help, yet her needs are great. Sara needs help financially for ongoing physical therapy, prosthetics, and ridiculously high medical bills. We would love to see her get back to being active and healthy, and with the right support and prosthetics, we know she can do it. Any amount helps, small or large. Please give what you can.
