Save George - The Iconic Tiki Fountain From The Kahiki Supper Club

The Kahiki Chapter of the Fraternal Order of Moai is acting to save and restore “George”, the iconic statue from the Kahiki Supper Club in Columbus, Ohio.  Currently, George is the only artifact from the legendary Kahiki that has been on public display.  With your help, we will keep this piece of pop-cultural history in the public eye and continue to celebrate the legacy of The Kahiki Supper Club.

Contributions will be used to move George from his current location to Tork Collaborative Arts, where he will be restored and prepared for display once again. Our goal is to restore George to the way he was when he was built in 1961. Once restored we will focus on finding a suitable location for George to once again be displayed for all to enjoy. However, before this can happen we will need to remove him from his current location and have him restored.

Background

George was designed and built by Architect Coburn Morgan, who was responsible for the decorations of the Kahiki. He was  originally displayed there and served as the centerpiece while people waited in the lobby to be seated.  When the Kahiki closed its doors  he was moved to their frozen food facility. In 2013 the Fraternal Order of Moai (FOM) purchased George  from the them at auction.  The Moai, in partnership with the Grass Skirt Tiki Room in Columbus, relocated George to the restaurant, and put him on display so the public could enjoy viewing him and pose for pictures once again.

Although on display at the Grass Skirt Tiki Room ownership of George has been retained by the Fraternal Order of Moai a  non-profit 501(c)(10) organization . Unfortunately in August of 2019 The Grass Skirt closed its doors and it is unclear what the landlord has planned for the future of the location. We  have been given some time to move George before a new tenant moves in.  So we need to act quickly to secure a future for George and preserve this iconic piece of Tiki history.

This is why we need your HELP !

The process to preserve George is costly. We first will need to separate him from the permanent cement base without doing much damage to the original structure. Once free we will have to employ movers with a crane to move him to Tork Collaborative Arts where the process of restoration will take place so we can once again have George displayed for all to enjoy.

We have set the initial goal at $4000 but expect the entire process to exceed this number greatly. Please consider helping with this endeavor so that generations will be able to continue to enjoy this piece of tiki history.
