118th Boston Marathon

This year I will be running the 118th Boston Marathon to support the Hopkinton Historical Society. I feel extremely privileged and blessed to have this opportunity.
You might find it a bit random that I have decided to run for the Historical Society. However, I find this opportunity to be a great honor. As many of you know, I grew up in the town of Hopkinton, which is where the marathon begins. The marathon starts in our historical district and growing up in Hopkinton gave me the privilege of experiencing the start of Boston Marathon on the historical Hopkinton common. World-renowned runners gather in historical downtown Hopkinton to begin this world-class marathon. Media from around the world gather on our common surrounded by historical buildings and statues from historical events of past marathons. The wheel chair runners begin at the Center School, one of Hopkinton's finest historical buildings. As a child, I thoroughly enjoyed going to the start of the marathon and watching all of the runners. I experienced the Kenyan runners coming to Elmwood Elementary School. Anyone who has gone through the Hopkinton school system can attest to how incredible of an experience this is. As I grew up, I continued to go to the marathon every year, getting fried dough, and cheering on all of the runners. For years my family and I have volunteered at the starting line. With my dad being the Head of Start Security for Hopkinton, we have become even more involved in the marathon.
When the bombings occurred at last years race, I, along with most people from Hopkinton, felt a unique form of sadness. The Boston Marathon was our race! It is the claim to fame our suburban town has. The marathon has always been the happiest day of the year for us. To see that excitement and happiness turn to shock and fear in an instant was incredibly hard. I have a special connection with the Boston Marathon. This is my first time ever running a marathon, and I do not know if I would be able to complete it without the inspiration I have from being a member of one of the greatest communities, Hopkinton.
The Boston Marathon is unique from other famous marathons, such as Chicago or New York, in the sense that it begins in a small town runs through nine small towns, and then ends in a big city. Most famous marathons begin and end in a big city. Boston is a special marathon because it has not diverted from its original history. The marathon is a huge part of the history of all of the small towns along the route. It is because of this very special town that I am able to embark on this journey.
This marathon will not in any means be an easy task for me. Anyone who has grown up around me can tell you that I have not always been an athlete; I was actually the furthest thing from one. However, I picked up long distance running when I went to college and quickly fell in love with it. I walked the Boston Marathon route in September for the Jimmy Fund Walk, and completed a half marathon in November, so I felt that this year's marathon was the next step in my journey.
I was fortunate enough to receive a number and not have to run bandit. However, with that being said, your support is greatly needed to help get me through training and, come April, the marathon. I would greatly appreciate it if you could support the Hopkinton Historical Society in honor of my race.
