Help Ms. Pearl

Donation protected
Miles, a five year old Great Dane, and Pearl, a seven year old Boston Terrier are a dynamic duo; an unconditionally loved pair. Three weeks ago Sarah had two outwardly happy, healthy, dogs. Today, both are neither. As conscientious a dog owner as Sarah is, the shocking combination of events have depleted a lot of the ten grand in savings that Sarah had set aside for canine emergencies. With projected costs threatening to be far more than double her savings, the financial burden combined with the emotional stress is already taking its toll.

Miles is Sarah’s ‘goodest boy’, an eternal goofball, and a major calming presence in her life. He was diagnosed on November 18th with advanced heart disease. A congenital and terminal issue, his enlarged heart won’t last much longer - weeks, months at most. The vet says he is not in great pain, but watching him slow down as he nears the end of his life has been devastating. Several tests were necessary for the diagnosis, and he is now being kept comfortable with various supplements & drugs.

Pearl is Sarah’s wild child and constant companion. Together they indulge in hiking, dock diving and competing at agility trials all over Ontario, which has been mutually fulfilling for them both. In the week after Miles’ diagnosis Pearl sustained a spinal/neck injury due to rapidly deteriorating eye sight. An emergency visit on November 25th to her vet quickly led to another emergency visit to the Ontario Veterinary College Hospital. Their resident neurologist cautiously recommended 6-8 weeks of crate rest with the likelihood of an MRI and delicate spinal surgery in the near future. Healing back problems, like in humans, is incredibly tricky.

On November 29th an ophthalmology specialist confirmed that both Pearl’s eyes require cataract surgery, despite having been clear when routinely checked earlier this year. The specialist also confirmed that she has Horners Syndrome. This is affecting her optic nerve to the point that she is afraid to walk unless she is right beside Sarah. Currently she has limited sight in her left eye, and can only see shadows in her right. The prognosis for a successful eye surgery is good, but being a Boston Terrier adds expensive complications.

As it stands until Pearl’s back injury heals, the eye surgery can’t be performed. Reading the vets’ reports of potential set backs, and outcomes is terrifying, and the worry that she may not come through is great. Pearl will definitely need at least one incredibly expensive surgery performed by specialists, if not two to return to a compromised version of her previous life. Right now she can’t enjoy even the 5 minute respites she gets from her cage because of the anxiety her vision is causing her.  Sarah is a pet industry professional who deals with the challenges of healthy animal care daily. For many around Guelph she is a go-to for advice on the subject. Her own pets are her highest priority, being well cared for, well exercised, and regularly monitored for health conditions. She is no stranger to high vet bills, and saves accordingly but this double!-triple! whammy, combined with worry of losing both her companions has her beside herself. The Gofund me is to ease a portion of the financial burden at this time so she can focus on being with Miles & Pearl. Thank you for any consideration.
